By Far His Best Work,
This review is from: ROAD TO NOWHERE (Paperback)
I began reading young adult mysteries (Pike, R.L. Stine, Cooney, ect...)and thrillers as a teenager. I am now a highly educated (PhD) 26 year old and I recently began rereading and studying these books. Most of them I don't really care for anymore for a variety of reasons (too predictable, unimaginative, ect...). However, this book represents(along with a few other Pike and Cooney novels) an exception. I appreciate this book more now than I did when I was a kid. I own and have read every Christopher Pike novel ever written. This was by far my favorite! The stories that his characters tell are amazingly detailed and creative. It was almost as if they were based on true events. The book drove me to tears at the end, not necessarily because it was sad, but because at the end I got this eary feeling that you can only get when an ending comes together so well. I highly reccommend this book to anyone adults included!

Teresa is running away from home. From her cheating boyfriend. From her sneaky best friend. While she is driving, she picks up two mysterious hitchhikers, Poppy Corn and Freedom Jack. As they drive along the California coast, they share stories, Teresa, of her terrible relationship, and Poppy Corn and Freedom Jack of a doomed couple they once knew. But as they continue driving, something worse happens, worse than any of their stories....

Different to the way the book describes it, but superb.,

I'm a Chris Pike fan...I've read seven or eight of his books, I read this 4th. This is a very good book, don't get me wrong, but it is in no way a childrens book, and in only a very small way does it relate to the description given on the back cover. The back cover describes a girl running away and being taken away by death. The story is actually about a teenage girl who runs away from home because her boyfriend cheated on her and made love to her best friend (which is graphically described in the book). The book is in no way scary, or a childrens book. I'd certify it a late-teens drama book. It also contains many cusses and a little violence. It really is an excellent drama book, and I'm only 13 but its not suitable for me, and its in no way a scary story, like any of pikes books, but I really enjoyed reading it. Along with this book I recommend "The Last Vampire" and "Final Friends" by CPike.

I wonder if readers understand the meaning of the title.,

This review is from: ROAD TO NOWHERE (Paperback)
Most books have the title mentioned in some way or other during the story. This one doesn't which is part of the fun--trying to solve that mystery. In the story, Teresa and her boyfriend have just quit dating because he breaks up with her. Teresa hops in her car and drives with no apparent destination in mind--she just has to get away. (Too obvious to be what the title is really referring to.) On her trip, Teresa picks up two hitchhikers who tell her about horrible things that happened to two friends they had. Will their story help Teresa learn some important lessons in life, or is it too late? The mystery remains--what is the title referring to??? Sorry, I have to be a tease--can't tell you! Just sit back and enjoy. Also Recommended: (Any Pike Book) Similar Themes: Remember Me 1,2,3; The Immortal; Bury Me Deep; The Midnight Club

Then along the way you meet two peps with totally screwed up names Freedom Jack, and Poppy Corn. you agree to give the hitchhikers a ride. along the way the three of you beging to tell stories. You tell of your boyfriends betrayl, and they tell of a guy and girl they once knew.
Along the way you begin to feel an undeniable attraction for Jack which is finally consummated at his "mother's" House. You then procede to travel on and meet Poppy's "father" the priest. then you continue to drive despite the fact you now feel sick. Then the memories of what else happened that night slowly come back to you, and you relize that your two hitchhikers are not what they seem, that the stories they told are closer to them then you ever relized, and now you are in a battle for your very soul...

Tragic, Wonderful, Moving,
This review is from: ROAD TO NOWHERE (Paperback)
"Road To Nowhere" is like a Twilight Zone episode and has a great twist ending. The characters from Jack and Poppy to Teresa and her mysterious best friend are all likeable and endearing. I love Pike's first person tales. I think everyone can relate to this book about missed opportunities and the power of love.

I have grown up on his books. He is always able to captivate the audience and pull them into the story. This one was just as well written as his others. He so good at leading you to one place, but you end up at another. This book is definitely one of my favorites. It will keep you guessing till the end. Very Enjoyable!!

Loved it!,

This review is from: ROAD TO NOWHERE (Paperback)
I loved this story. It was the first Pike book I ever read. A friend from school suggested it to me over five years ago. Now I own all of his books, besides the Spooksville series and Sati, which I plan on buying very soon. Pike has a definite way with words and now I hang around bookstores every time a new title is due out. Teresa, Poppy, and Free definitely weave an interesting story, one that will hook you if you aren't already hooked.

Intruiging, bittersweet, with the overtone of salvation.,

This review is from: ROAD TO NOWHERE (Paperback)
A woman, Theresa, runs away from home after finding her lover had fallen in love with her best friend. Driving she knew not where, she picks up two hitchikers- a man and a woman. Respectively, they tell their stories as Theresa drives- Theresa's slow but steady rise to fame on the singing circuit, only to find out her lover's infidelity. He tells the story of "A guy he knew" who, by a cruel twist of fate, goes from a promising career to a morphine addict who dies violently. The woman tells of "A girl she knew"- the man's sweetheart- who was brutally killed along with him, after being seperated for many years. While they tell their stories, the man seduces Theresa, while the woman takes her to a church, urging her to confess her sins. In the end, it is revealed that they represent the devil and the angel, here to get Theresa's soul- she never left the house, but had slit her wrists, upon finding out her lover's infidelity. In the end, she goes with neither one, but is given a second chance to redeeem herself. I found this story to be very intruiging, with the concept of the angel and devil interesting. A must for all Pike fans |
