Product Description

Road Rash debuted on the 16-bit Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. All races take place in locales in the U.S. state of California on progressively longer two-lane roads. While the game had a two-player mode, it was a take-turns system that only allowed one person to play his or her individual game at a time. The tracks depict California State Routes on highway shields as the player travels through the level. The levels are, from start and pressing right on the selection screen: Sierra Nevada (CA 89) Pacific Coast (CA 1) Redwood Forest (no highway shields) Palm Desert (CA 74) Grass Valley (CA 49) There are 8 bikes to choose from, and two weapons: chains and clubs. Races would be won by placing first, second, third, or fourth in each of the five tracks. After all five tracks were won, the player would advance to the next level, where the track would be longer, the opponents faster, and much more money at stake for a victory or a loss. The game was eventually ported onto the Game Gear, Sega Master System, Nintendo Game Boy and Commodore AMIGA making the debut title the only Road Rash game of the Genesis series to have been distributed onto other consoles and computers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Road Rash - Beyond Nostalgia, October 12, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Road Rash (Video Game)
Old video games, like certain TV shows, are an unfortunate lot, as they don't age as well as most books and movies. I was afraid that the nostalgia bug was blinding me when I got the idea of buying Road Rash 1 for the Sega Genesis, but after receiving it in the mail I can safely say that it has held up well even after a period of over 13 years.

The copy I bought from Amazon reseller "Link's Chest" was beat up, but I mean no disrespect when I say that. I knew it would be in semi-bad condition when I bought it. It works perfect. My copy has seen a LOT of game play and that's a good thing. That's because Road Rash isn't the type of game that you play for a little bit and then get bored of. You don't buy Road Rash just to put it in a display case. No, it's the type of game you play over and over again because it's insanely fun, especially with a friend. And reseller "Link's Chest" was the fastest shipper I've ever run across besides Amazon Prime, so thumbs up to them (whoever they are)!

I think the best way to describe Road Rash is to think of Burnout 3 (2004), except on motorcycles and a full 13 years older! The sense of speed on your motorcycle will get your heart racing, and the simple combat of punching and kicking other riders (not always a good idea) is intensified by the fact that you can steal other riders' weapons like clubs and chains and even a motorcycle cop's billy club. Going over hills blindly will probably run you head-first into a car and the humiliation of having to run back to your ride after bailing is both humiliating and amusing.

The only warnings I have for the uninitiated is that you're probably going to have to clean the contact area of the cartridge with some rubbing alcohol, and in order to get my game to work I had to fully "seat" the cartridge, and then retract it ever so slightly. Also, the game doesn't save because the watch battery inside is long dead. I'm considering buying the special tool needed to get the cartridge open, plus you have to solder the new battery in place. It's a small price to pay for a game that did everything right, so long ago.
