Hat Check Girl, a collaboration between veteran songwriters Annie Gallup and Peter Gallway, offers a collection of 9 new cowrites and an update of Gallway's Up In The County
. Annie sings & plays acoustic and electric guitar, lap steel, Weissenborn, dobro and banjo; Peter sings and plays acoustic, electric and baritone guitars, accordion and keyboards. The sound of the recording and the timelessness of the stories make this record fit comfortably into the category of Americana. Gallup has performed throughout North America since 1994. She was heard on NPR's All Things Considered
in an interview with Noah Adams. Gallway emerged from the Greenwich Village scene of the 60's, releasing three albums on Warner/Reprise plus a dozen more on various indies.
We are in the presence of two very fine songwriters here. The writing is all the more powerful for its subtlety, and the musical settings only enhance the effect...something like the solo work of either Daniel Lanois or Robbie Robertson. Music this finely crafted can sometimes sound emotionless, but the effect here is intimate, and filled with simmering passion. --Oliver di Place
