Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–Vehicles and more vehicles are what readers see as they follow a British family driving in city traffic, through the roadworks, past grazing cows, and finally to the sea. Along the way, they are introduced to a plethora of prepositions (e.g., up, down, around, into, under, across). The vibrant collage artwork is bursting with color: bold hues in the bustling city, serene shades and textures in the country, and the soothing colors of the seaside. Observant youngsters will notice that the steering wheels are on the right side of the cars instead of the left and that the license plates look different. Large type and few words per page encourage youngsters to explore and pore over the details. Children will be engaged whether being read to, or tackling this offering on their own.–Wanda Meyers-Hines, Ridgecrest Elementary School, Huntsville, AL

More About the Author

When my two boys were small they were absolutely fascinated by all different sorts of transport and spent hours playing with toy cars and trains. Little vehicles were always lined up along garden walls and window sills or the edge of the bath and I ended up lying on the floor for hours too, brooming cars along road mats and building more and more complicated train tracks. I found myself buying new tunnels and buffers just to keep myself amused during those long, slow days.

I wanted to find an excuse to do something a bit more creative with my time, so I started printing vehicle pictures onto their bedroom walls and sewing little cars and buses along their duvet covers. One thing led to another and soon I was coming up with ideas for picture books.

My illustrations are all collages made from many different manufactured and handmade papers, built up in layers to create depth and texture. I now also give talks about my work and run collage workshops for children in schools and libraries.

In March 2011 I was highly commended by the Booktrust judges in their 'Best New Illustrators Award'.

This review is from: On The Road (Hardcover)
Simple text, bright illustrations and vehicle after vehicle make up this perfect book for those toddlers who are also fanatics of moving machines. Follow the little red car as it carries the family through the city to its final destination by the sea. Characters, both drivers and pedestrians, line these pages to help children understand up, over, around, and STOP, along with other phrases used to describe motion.
