This review is from: Road to Teaching: A Guide to Teacher Training, Student Teaching, and Finding a Job (Paperback)
This book came in handy as a student teacher and when applying for teaching jobs. I appreciated the strategies on how to jump-start my student teaching on a positive note by creating relationships with my students and CT. Even though I have now completed my student teaching, I will continue to use many of the book's classroom management and discipline tips in my own classroom, such as the question & answer box and bellnote activity. I recommend this to any student teacher."

I bought this book right before my student teaching, and while I didn't use it so much before my student teaching (despite there being a whole section dedicated to the pre-service teacher), it came in handy for what to expect during student teaching and what to do after. There is a website for the book that gives you extremely helpful information, such as the most asked interview questions, to help you prepare and land a job.
If you need some help with the unspoken "rules" of student teaching, or some tips to get a job, this book will help you. Establishing networks in bigger districts is a little harder to do, but those sections may work for smaller districts where there is only one high school, etc.

An Excellent Book to get the Most out of Your Teacher Training,
This review is from: Road to Teaching: A Guide to Teacher Training, Student Teaching, and Finding a Job (Paperback)
"Road to Teaching: A Guide to Teacher Training, Student Teaching, and Finding a Job" by Eric Hougan, is exactly the tool I need to prepare for my teachers' training programme. I just completed a Certificate in Rudolf Steiner Education in 2010, and I am about to start a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary) in February 2011. (We have primary schools over here in New Zealand - I think you have lower and middle grade schools in USA as an equivalent). The book outlines very pertinent considerations for anyone who wants to get the most out of their teacher training course, and to then have the greatest chance of success in obtaining a teaching position.
Already I have created a networking contacts list on Excel. And I will also be creating a Reading List of all the books I studied last year, and will be adding to it during this year's study (and my own reading around the subjects). And that's just from a few strategies in the book! I am making a list of ideas from "Road to Teaching" as I read, and I've now got a very detailed list of things to think about and do so that I am prepared for a year of productive learning (as well as some effective tools for organizing resources throughout this year and beyond). I highly recommend this book. It will help you to get the most out of your teachers' training. It will also help you to be prepared for student teaching (well, as prepared as anyone can be...gulp). And it will help you to reflect and finely tune why you want to be a teacher and give you tools to develop way beyond your training. I am now looking at the next few years (training and getting a teaching position) from a higher perspective and I think that is one of the main gifts of this book. It helps you to define and keep in mind your vision for teaching, and then it helps you to become actively involved in making it a reality. Thank you Eric!

Hougan's book is an absolute must-have for future teachers. I am currently into my junior year, pursuing a degree in Elementary Ed. and this book has given me a wonderful place to start thinking about the real classroom (since college courses never fully prepare you). Its a great reference and I highly recommend it.

This book gives great, practical advice for those just entering the profession or working toward a teaching degree. As a current teacher, I really like the strategies the author gives--they are realistic and seem easy to implement. I wish this book was around when I was entering the profession!

After reading this book I recommended it to my professors to suggest to incoming freshman. This book was practical and helpful for those entering the teaching profession. It was by far the most helpful book of tips for education majors I have ever come across. I recommend it to students in the beginning, middle, and even those toward the end of their teaching degree! Enjoy.
