This review is from: Road Trip (Audio CD)
At first blush, the play list did not excite my expectations, but to my genuine surprise I found each antiquated standard had been spit and polished for the occasion. Benjamin May sets the pace with trenchant intros for Chamberlain's beguiling side-door entrances. As she fleshes out the lyric; her unique tone, range and voicing defy comparisons to anyone. She effortlessly infuses each rendering with very subtle, very singular, very personal, very creative and very entertaining nuances. Add Cunliffe's beguiling piano pastices and Eschete's spot-on solos, it's clear from the start of this thoughtful collection that these talented musicians enjoy their little sandbox and play nice together.
A "singer's singer", Chamberlain is a seasoned and prolific performer in Southern California. No beaujolais nouveau here - all promise with no essence. She is the real deal. Chateau du Chamberlain - complex, smoky and yeilding a vintage performance.
