Book Description

Road Trip USA March 24, 2009
Professional traveler Jamie Jensen traveled more than 400,000 miles to bring you the best-selling guide Road Trip USA. In this expanded tour of Route 66, Jamie covers the kitschy "Main Street of America," one of the country's first transcontinental highways. From the Meramac Caverns to the wild creatures on display in roadside menageries, this historic route survives, despite being replaced by a high-speed Interstate. From the golden sands and sunshine of Los Angeles to the gritty streets of St. Louis and Chicago, Road Trip USA Route 66 highlights major cities, obscure towns, popular attractions, roadside curiosities, local lore, and oddball trivia on this unforgettable journey into America, then and now.

More About the Author

I grew up in Southern California, back when freeways were new, cheeseburgers cost a quarter, and every beach had a beachfront amusement park. After wasting my youth bumming around the country (making hay in Kansas, crewing sailboats on the Chesapeake Bay, studying architecture at UC Berkeley and ghost-writing a book for the Grateful Dead...), I started work on my book Road Trip USA, a thick and tasty (and fully illustrated!) guide to the best drives in America.

Since then, over 4 ever-improving editions of the book, I've traveled close to half-a-million miles in search of the perfect stretch of two-lane blacktop. Though I drive way more than is healthy, for me or for the planet, I get out of the car as much as possible to check out the best french fries, rodeos, historic trails, and slices of cherry pie that I can find.

If you have Road Trip USA then don't bother with Road Trip USA Route 66. There is not very much additional material. For an overview of Route 66, this is an okay book. If you want a lot of detail about the route, there are many other books that are much beter. Road Trip USA Route 66 gives an overview of the route, the towns on the route and a little history about the route. There are no turn directions, which are needed if you intend to travel Route 66, which I highly recommend (it will take you two weeks to a month to travel all 2400 miles and see most of the well-known sites). Route 66 is not marked very well in many of the states it passes through. This is why you have to have detailed maps or a book that details the route.

By the way, the original Road Trip USA is a good overview book of the main non-interstate, transcontenental highways in the USA. I have used it many times to travel with my wife, in our convertible, on long weekends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Route 66 Bible, June 2, 2011
This review is from: Road Trip USA Route 66 (Paperback)
We've just completed a Route 66 road trip and this little book was our bible, I wouldn't have been without it!!

This book is well written and easy to follow, with plenty of pictures of things to see and do along the way. It covers the cute, kitschy places you may want to stop, and also a couple of practical suggestions for places to eat and stay in most cities. It also has handy info for side trips off Route 66 that you will probably want to do while you're there. I found it very useful.

Note: The book assumes you'll be driving East to West like most people. We went backwards, so we just had to read the book backwards. Also, the book does include a few small maps, but they're not really sufficient on their own. We used a GPS so we didn't need to worry about the maps. Also, the book isn't fully comprehensive, there are a few spots and even towns that it misses, but it's so small and compact that it's easy to carry around with you every day, so that's an acceptable compromise.

I bought several books for our Route 66 trip, and this was by far the best.
