5.0 out of 5 stars Collectible? I think not. It's $19.98 at dead.net!, August 17, 2008
This review is from: Road Trips Vol.1 No.3: Summer '71 (Audio CD)
Greedy, greedy, greedy. This isn't a "collectible." It's just not available unless you know to go to the Dead's web site (dead.net) and order it there, where it costs less than twenty bucks.

This person is selling it for nearly twice its cost. Bad Karma, vendor!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Ramrod, September 18, 2010

Dark Star-The Other One (The Bus To Never Ever Land) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Road Trips Vol.1 No.3: Summer '71 (Audio CD)
Many people know about The Houseboat Tapes that were returned in 2005 but few know that these tapes were discovered in former roadie Ramrod's belongings after his passing in 2006. Lawrence "Ramrod" Shurtliff had worked for the band since 1967 and was the last employee to be let go from GDP. Shortly after passing, these tapes came into the possesion of some longtime tapers who thought the tapes belonged back in the vault. This is how we ended up with this release.

The first disc is made up of highlights from 7-31-71 at Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT (Saturday):
Big Railroad Blues rocks at a fast clip only to be followed by a heavy Hard To Handle. Me And Bobby McGee is sweet while the following Dark Star is mindbending with a patch from what was the only known audience in circulation. Bird Song is an early '71 version so it isn't as jammed out as long as some later versions but is very good for a '71 version. Next, we get the hot but common for '71 Not Fade Away->Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad->Not Fade Away which is followed by the encore of Uncle John's Band->Johnny B. Goode.

The second set is made up of highlights from 8-23-71 Auditorium Theatre, Chicago, IL (Monday):
This set gets off to a good start with a groovin' China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider. Both Truckin' and Sugaree are strong early versions. The jam starts with That's It For The Other One with a hot Me And My Uncle happening before the second verse of The Other One. That's It For The Other One leads into a nice early Wharf Rat before the ending Sugar Magnolia.

The bonus disc includes five songs from 8-6-71 at the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, CA; another two from 7-31-71 Yale Bowl in New Haven, CT and three from 8-4-71 at the Terminal Island Correctional Facility in Santa Ana CA.

Just a footnote to supplement J. Polsgrove, the previous reviewer here. For many products on Amazon, as with this one, the 3d link on the right under "Product Details" invites the customer to "Tell us about a lower price". Well, uhm, as with many of the CDs originating from dead.net sold here on Amazon, ahh, ahem, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!
