I've never heard anything about this singer named Ruth Cameron (actually, she's the bassist Charlie Haden's wife) on her first album for the Verve label. This record was recommended by a friend and I was surprised since I bought it. The title album should have been called "After-Hours Nightclub" instead "Roadhouse"... These are warm, quiet performances, with standards such as "Again", "Body and Soul", "My Old Flame" (in my opinion the best track), "Willow Weep For Me" among others. The Cameron's vocals are as much sensually spoken as sung. Cameron is backed by a small group, but what a group!! The remarkable Alan Broadbent on piano arrangements and Charlie Haden's bass solos presents one of the best jazz performances I've heard, lately. You should listen this CD !

Really nice CD. Ruth Cameron's voice is mellow and penetrating. The production is excellent. Charlie Haden is her husband and the
backing music is tasteful, spare, and superb. Good morning music, good having-friends-over music. An album of standards, with
"My Old Flame" being worth the price of admission.

This CD transported me to the good old days I spent visiting small smoke-filled jazz cafes. (mostly "smoke free" these days) I have no complaints with Cameron's voice. Its smooth, lazy, and often sexy, but Broadbent could, and maybe should be the headliner on this CD. The man is a genius on the keyboard.

I loved this album, especially the start of "Something Cool" with minor notes; Ruth turned this song into a very melancoholic, yet intriguing piece...I took a long time to skip this first song and start listening to the others.
In brief, jazz is a difficult kind of genre to listen to, not very easy to digest, Ruth has a very smooth, deep and simple voice and she makes us listen to all these nice jazz standards recorded in this album swiftly. Sit back, relax, pour a glass of wine, close your eyes and listen to Ruth's soothing voice...

The negative review is absurd. Ruth Cameron is a great singer, and her dedication to the unique approach of the legendary Jeri Southern is astounding. Pick this one up while you can, because someday soon people will be paying big bucks for this great album. Not only that, this album features Alan Broadbent on piano on most of the songs, one of the best accompanists ever, and the great jazz pianist Brad Mehldau on others. Ralph Moore on Tenor Sax....this is tremendous.
