Product Description

As the pace of business competition accelerates, seat-of-the-pants management becomes ever more dangerous. In order to survive, entrepreneurs operating their ventures in uncertain environments need a focused "path to profitability." Roadmap to Entrepreneurial Success provides the necessary tools for both the new and experienced entrepreneur to stay on course and succeed. This essential business resource debunks dated concepts and offers a step-by-step program for:

* identifying value drivers in your business, and communicating those drivers to your venture team and potential investors * understanding the business planning and business modeling process * leveraging the six competitive advantages and five market entry strategies that successful entrepreneurs use most often * gaining immediate "sales traction" in a fast-changing marketplace * growing around the "growth wall" that stops many companies cold * getting on the radar of potential acquirers if you choose to sell your business

Filled with key steps and strategies, it's a start-to-finish guide to maximizing growth.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book will drive you crazy, September 5, 2004
When the author finally gets down to actual entrepreneurship, he touches upon some interesting ideas. But within a paragraph it's all over and he's moved on to something completely new.

This book could have been so much better if he had thrown out the half of the book which has nothing to do with entrepreneurship and gone deep in the remaining half.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very dissapointing, January 2, 2005
By Rob McReady (San Jose, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
If you are looking to buy an introductory business book for someone withgout any business knowledge, such as a high school student, this book is not a bad choice. However, for anyone with more than one month's experience out in the business world, this book will dissapoint.

The author lacks experience as an entrepreneur and business person and it really shows in his writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Misleading Title and Promo, August 17, 2004
By Ralph Carter (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
I am forced to give the book a low rating because it's not what the public is led to believe it is. It's not really a book on entrepreneurial success so much as it is a fast overview of a multitude of topics stretching from economic history to the evolution of the venture capital industry to human resources management, and finally, to actual startup advice.

I might add that all of these topics are delivered in short snack-sized pieces of, at best, a couple of paragraphs. Which means that just as you start to find the topic interesting and relevant, it's over and the author moves on to something completely different. This leaves the reader frustrated from wanting more depth.

If you are looking for startup advice (the promised "roadmap to success"), you will not find it here.

One final point on the author's outline for a business plan. While it looks pretty comprehensive at first blush, following it would result in a document close to 100 pages in length. If the author had any real world experience in entrepreneurship, he would understand that busy investors are extremely reluctant to read anything over 20 or at most 30 pages in length and view longer plans as a sign of poor writing and editing skills.

If you need a good practical startup manual, this is not it, instead check out Rob Adam's A Good Swift Kick in the A**.

The author's lack of business experience shows in this effort. He needs to actually try starting a business rather than just writing about it.
