When I first tried this product, I wasn't thrilled...the sauce was a bit gritty and clumpy...and REALLY strong.

But I've found the solution. Add extra dairy substitute (I use unsweetened rice milk) to thin the sauce out a bit and stir CONSTANTLY to prevent clumping. Add 1/2 a bag of frozen peas to the pasta when cooking...and then once it's completed...refrigerate it overnight, and microwave the next day. That is the secret. The sauce has time to rest and becomes creamy and develop a mild, cheesy flavor. I really recommend this!

We have been using this for about 6 months as a dairy free "Mac and Cheese" substitute. I buy it every week from Whole Foods for my daughter, and sometimes through Amazon Prime (as in this case). I bought the 12 pack on subscribe and save. Stuck to the boxes I received I found a sticker placed over the original preparation instructions changing the prep ingredients from 1/2 C milk substitute of choice to 2/3C cold water and 3 TBSP of Sunflower oil. YUCK. Also on the sticker was the wording "The ground mustard seed has a strong flavor in this batch". Well that is putting it lightly. It actually tastes like rancid milk once prepared and is totally 100% inedible. As this is a grocery item I cannot return it and I am extremely unhappy that I now have 12 boxes of inedible Chreese on my shelf. I will be throwing them all in the garbage. The expire date on them is 8/2014 but I see no batch number (for those curious).

UPDATE: (May 2013) -- I contacted Roads End and just like everyone else is saying, the boxes marked with expiry of 08/2014 are the "new flavor" (a.k.a. disgusting) ones. Their customer service was fantastic and they promptly shipped me out new flavoring packets like they have for many other reviewers. I recently found boxes with an 05/2014 expiry and they taste 100% normal. To summarize, if you buy this product and it has an expiry of 08/2014, chances are high that you are not going to like the flavor. Contact Roads End and ask for new flavor packets promptly.

Update (June 2013): These guys strike again. I picked up some new boxes with a "Jan 2015" date on them and the dreaded rancid flavoring is back. It's not as strong as the 8/2014 batch but almost just as bad. At this point, I am ready to be done with this company.

This mac 'n cheese was considered delicious by my family until they changed the formula with "a more potent mustard seed".

I agree with other reviewers about the new flavor.

The expiration date on the boxes is 8/2014. There seems to be no batch #.

The product used to be delicious. Now it tastes like TOXIC CHEMICALS. I am not the type of person to complain when something is a little off, but this is totally not edible. If I tried to give this to my daughter, she would never try it again.

Something is wrong.

UPDATE-

After contacting Roads End, they said they are going back to the original formula. Thank goodness, because we love this stuff.

I'm a vegan and have prepared a couple different homemade "mac and cheeze" recipes at home, and all of them ended up in the trash. I saw this at Whole Foods today and thought I'd give it a shot. Those who say it has a very strange odor and/or taste probably aren't familiar with nutritional yeast, which is one of the main ingredients and what makes it so strong-smelling. I added about 3/4 cup unsweetened plain soy milk and 1 1/2 tablespoons of organic Smart Balance (lower calorie earth balance, also vegan). I cooked the sauce in a separate sauce pan and added it to the drained pasta after it had cooked and thickened a bit. I also added maybe 1/2 teaspoon of mustard. Sauce was very creamy, but not big on flavor really. I ended up adding salt, cayenne pepper, and after all else failed, threw in maybe 1/3 cup of pepperjack daiya (don't usually buy that stuff either so it was lucky I did today!). After the addition of a little Daiya it was really good. It was relatively cheap for being a vegan cheeze product, I think like $2.00 or so. I will probably buy it from time to time, but I can't give something that came in a box a 5 star review when I had to add so much to it (and change the cooking instructions!) This is probably great for vegan/extremely lactose intolerant kids who haven't ever really had the Kraft stuff. Definitely better than the real thing nutritionally (well maybe not after I was done with it...).

I've been plant based for many years and I just tried this - I love that there are no added oils. I just use soy milk (about a cup because I like the sauce thinner) and a little bit of my own seasoning such as smoked paprika, garlic powder and extra nutritional yeast for more of a punch.

Let me say that if you are coming off an omnivore or lactose/higher fat vegetarian diet you may not enjoy this as much. You can't go straight from the blue box of mac and cheese and expect it to taste the same. But if you've been plant based or vegan for a while and have cleansed your palate from the taste of dairy and concentrated fats like oils, butter and margarine you will really appreciate the creaminess and taste of Road's End Shells & Chreese.
