But I've found the solution. Add extra dairy substitute (I use unsweetened rice milk) to thin the sauce out a bit and stir CONSTANTLY to prevent clumping. Add 1/2 a bag of frozen peas to the pasta when cooking...and then once it's completed...refrigerate it overnight, and microwave the next day. That is the secret. The sauce has time to rest and becomes creamy and develop a mild, cheesy flavor. I really recommend this!
UPDATE: (May 2013) -- I contacted Roads End and just like everyone else is saying, the boxes marked with expiry of 08/2014 are the "new flavor" (a.k.a. disgusting) ones. Their customer service was fantastic and they promptly shipped me out new flavoring packets like they have for many other reviewers. I recently found boxes with an 05/2014 expiry and they taste 100% normal. To summarize, if you buy this product and it has an expiry of 08/2014, chances are high that you are not going to like the flavor. Contact Roads End and ask for new flavor packets promptly.
Update (June 2013): These guys strike again. I picked up some new boxes with a "Jan 2015" date on them and the dreaded rancid flavoring is back. It's not as strong as the 8/2014 batch but almost just as bad. At this point, I am ready to be done with this company.
I agree with other reviewers about the new flavor.
The expiration date on the boxes is 8/2014. There seems to be no batch #.
The product used to be delicious. Now it tastes like TOXIC CHEMICALS. I am not the type of person to complain when something is a little off, but this is totally not edible. If I tried to give this to my daughter, she would never try it again.
Something is wrong.
After contacting Roads End, they said they are going back to the original formula. Thank goodness, because we love this stuff.
Let me say that if you are coming off an omnivore or lactose/higher fat vegetarian diet you may not enjoy this as much. You can't go straight from the blue box of mac and cheese and expect it to taste the same. But if you've been plant based or vegan for a while and have cleansed your palate from the taste of dairy and concentrated fats like oils, butter and margarine you will really appreciate the creaminess and taste of Road's End Shells & Chreese.

Best vegan mac and cheese I've found on Amazon. Creamy and cheesey flavor, even if you don't add the oil (which I never do). I've purchased several boxes of this.Published 5 months ago by didi
