5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, December 28, 2007
This review is from: Roads to Extinction: Essays on the Holocaust (Hardcover)
A groundbreaking work of Holocaust scholarship. Friedman was one of the first academics to truly examine Holocaust material. This is not a thorough overview of the Holocaust, in the style of Martin Gilbert or Leni Yahil. It's a collection of essays, each examining one Holocaust issue in depth. And by depth, I mean a level of detail, insight and clarity that is hard to find in academia or in Holocaust scholarship. Chapters include fascinating and little known material, ranging from Karaites to the question of Jewish libraries, as well as more classical topics. In addition, there's an entire section examining Holocaust historiography. One caveat: the scholarship dates from the fifties and onward, (although it was edited and published in 1980) so any dates and numbers should be checked against later sources. Still - an invaluable and irreplacable work.
