5.0 out of 5 stars Superior adventure novel, January 13, 2008

This review is from: Two Roads to Guadalupe (Paperback)
Like the better-known Travels of Jaimie MacPheeters (for which Taylor won the Pulizer Prize) this is an adventure novel of a teen-age boy, this one on march in 1846-7 from Missouri to the Mexican War. And, like Taylor's other novels, it is full of droll wit, historical accuracy, and blunt good humor. It also lacks political correctness, being written before we started all of that. If the Apaches slaughtered people, he says the Apaches slaughtered people. If the Mexicans were useless as soldiers, he says so. In fact, his candor is kind of refreshing. The book, unfortunately, didn't sell nearly so well as his others, and that means they're fairly rare. The copy I got was on high-acid paper and crumbled in my hands as I read it, so I can't pass it along or save it for my grandson. Nevertheless, if you liked Taylor's other books, or if you like Frazier's Flashman novels, you'll get a kick out of this one.
