Book Description

September 9, 2003

In this unflinching, yet luminous collection of eight short stories, Kathy-Diane Leveille explores how the past won't let go, how it shapes our future as well as our present. In portraits full of heart and depth, Leveille excavates the narrow stereotypes we have of rural life, offering instead the complexity and grit of rural culture. Set in the Maritimes and rooted in working-class experience, Roads Unravelling depicts the lives of ordinary women as they grapple with the mysteries as well as the absurdities of adulthood.

More About the Author

I truly have loved books forever. My best friends are books; the fascinating characters, exotic worlds and challenges they contain. When I was growing up, a Saturday wasn't complete without a trip to the library. I would sit at the back of the city bus, where there was plenty of room to spread the booty, and anticipate the worlds that lay between the covers.

It wasn't until after I'd been working as a broadcast journalist with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for ten years, that I discovered the only thing more fulfilling than reading a wonderful story is trying to write one.

I became a transplanted Maritimer twenty years ago when I moved to the Kennebecasis River where most of my fiction is set. My first book "Roads Unravelling" was published a few years ago by Sumach Press. The novel
"Let the Shadows Fall Behind You" was released in the spring of 2009 by Kunati books.

I live life in the slow lane next to a wild flower and herb garden visited by a colorful array of birds, one ground hog and four ravenous deer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A looking glass into rural Canada, October 7, 2008
This review is from: Roads Unravelling: Short Stories (Paperback)
What is accomplished here is rare and exquisite. Each story offers a glimpse into hardscrabble longing. These aren't characters on a predestined trajectory; these are flesh-and-blood people. Fans of minimalists like Alice Munro are especially encouraged to give Ms. Leveille and her characters their due.
