Product Description

One of the most popular and beloved American roots artists, with a 33-year string of critically acclaimed albums and literally thousands of packed raucous live performances, Marcia Ball's Roadside Attractions follows 2008's Peace, Love & BBQ.

Review

Ball is a consummate pro--a killer pianist, a great singer and songwriter. Powerful. Righteous -- Billboard

Based in Austin and steeped in New Orleans, Marcia Ball plumbs the richness of both musical meccas. From rootsy swamp pop and blues-drenched boogie woogie to languid ballads, Ball is equally comfortable with brash roadhouse romps and caressing love songs. -- USA Today

Bayou boogie has a queen and her name is Marcia Ball. -- The New Orleans Times-Picayune

More fun than a barrel of funky monkeys. Spicy, Texas-Louisiana blues, rock 'n' roll and boogie-woogie...awesome piano. -- National Public Radio

Scrumptious, Southern-fried boogies, blues, and ballads with the infectious street beat of New Orleans at the core. -- The Austin Chronicle

As I said in subject line: stunning. tunes have a wide variety of styles, each displaying penetrating musicianship and lyrics that will bring you from laughter to tears. I do not think it sufficiently acknowledged in the business that Ms Ball is note for note one of the most gifted pianists out there for her command of the elements of keyboard and for sheer affective presence. (I would not exclude the classical performers from that comparison). Get this album and see if I'm mistaken.

Marcia Ball's new record is a tribute to her consistency. It shows off what she does best, swinging uptempo grooves, boogie dance numbers, and a fantastic variety of piano playing from Chicago-style blues, driving barrelhouse tunes, and Professor Longhair-esque keyboard runs such as on "We Fell Hard." Ball pulls off the piano playing with such ease and nonchalance that it is easy to forget how great a player she is.

What distinguishes this record from her previous ones is the attitude behind the songs. These songs come as lessons in their joy and exuberance. She starts off telling people in "That's How It Goes" that "It's not the destination / it's a trip" and "I help you and you help me / That's the way the world should be," and continues with the song "Look Before You Leap" where her mother tells her, "You better look before you leap/you might find yourself in way too deep." However, these do not come off as preachy but more as advice. And then there's the song "I Heard It All" where she hears her man in the next room begging his wife to take him back over an ominous electric piano. Of course there's a food metaphor song, "A Little Sugar," where Ball affirms, "A little sugar makes your day complete / you can keep your mustard greens / just give me those pecan pralines." Roadside Attractions is great party or road-trip music with a liberal dose of positive attitude in witty turns of phrase and great keyboard work.--David Kunian, OffBeat Magazine, May 2011 issue.

Marcia Ball is one of the greatest talents out there--I have been a major admirer of hers since 1986 and followed her career seeing her many times. She is as gracious as talented--Roadside Attractions is no exception--if 'THIS USED TO BE PARADISE' dosen't move you your half dead!

This CD is close to seeing Marcia Ball live - something everyone that enjoys good music should experience. This is a dance in your seat, foot moving, bang your steering wheel, clap, and sing along...good time. She makes that keyboard jump.

When we bought this, it was Marcia Ball's newest CD. It is certainly different than the other two we have. She is a good singer and performer, and her piano playing is awesome. I'd like to see her in person again.

Teaching a lesson i the blues. One of the better blues piano players. Rocking, roll-house blues piano. Oh, yeah, and she can sing, too. Sometimes I felt there was too much structure in the song production, but overall, one I'll keep on enjoying even after school is out.

I was disappointed with this CD. I used to love Marcia Ball back in the early days. I just did not like the selection of songs on this album. I remember her being more bluesy and this just did not cut it.
