Dr. CALDWELL KNOWS MAINE GEOLOGY LIKE NOBODY ELSE,
By A Customer
This review is from: Roadside Geology of Maine (Roadside Geology Series) (Paperback)
It was a pleasure adding this book to my Roadside Geology Collection. It is appropriate that Mountain Press had Dr. Caldwell do this book. His vast field experience and knowledge highly qualify him as an Maine geology expert. I fell in love with geology and work as a geologist having been a student of Caldwell's 25 years ago. The book continues his legacy on the Geology of Maine.

I have this book to thank for passing my Maine Professional Geologist Exam. It was a great way to get both the big picture geologic features of Maine but also learn about more detailed information on glacial features, individual formations, etc. The language is plain, which is a good thing! Definitely written by a Mainer, with some dry humor that was appreciated. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Caldwell as a professor, and this book was written like he taught. Kind of a pay attention or you'll miss the joke style. I recommend reading with a large-scale map of the state, as it was difficult in some spots to get the spatial relationships down. It was arranged well to make the most of your trip time, and the directions were enough to see some cool features without too much trouble. Worth the read for any geologists in the area or anyone with a casual interest wanting to experience some of the complicated and unique geology of Maine!

This a great book! It is very detail, almost like a college text book. In Maine there are fewer and fewer areas open to rock collecting. This book uses roadways as guides to view underling rock strata. I plan to keep this book in my car as a ready reference to places I drive.

Fascinating: the author makes the topic easy to understand even for non-experts. Reading this got me excited about Maine geology. This book would be a great addition to school libraries or classrooms.

One of my hobbies is historical geology; e.g. I have most of the Roadside Geology books. I rate this one just behind the one from Massachusetts that I consider to be the best of the lot.
