Book Description

Roadside Geology October 1, 2002
Nebraska's geology is as exciting as the Cornhuskers. The state hosts boiling riverbeds, puzzling fossil beds, and sandstone toadstools, not to mention a now dormant sea of sand that once moved fast enough to dam rivers; and these Sand Hills could be on the march again as the global climate warms. Changing climate influenced much of Nebraska's geology, from the waxing and waning of continental glaciers to the extinction of some of Nebraska's former inhabitants. You'll discover badlands, braided rivers, fossil rhinos entombed in volcanic ash, and the largest dune field in the Western Hemisphere.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Road by road and mile by mile, the Nebraska guide covers the entire state, locating and describing geologic features. Some are as large as Chimney rock, the Sand Hills and Scotts Bluff. Others are as subtle as a patch of churned earth caused by a meteor strike in what is now Iowa that kicked up the shallow sea and its sediment that then covered part of Nebraska." --Gerald Wade, Omaha World-Herald

About the Author

When he is not teaching, kayaking, or spending time with his family, Harmon Maher studies the tectonic history of Svalbard, a group of islands in the Arctic Ocean.

This is an excellent description of Nebraska geology. We have several books in this series, and we find them very informative, after you get used to the jargon. (We are not geologists!) We returned this because it was a duplicate gift.

This review is from: Roadside Geology of Nebraska (Roadside Geology Series) (Paperback)
This book will be ENJOYED by BOTH people who have a deep interest in Nebraska Geology and by people who love to do ROAD TRIPS & SIGHTSEEING in Nebraska. It highlights the main geological features to see when you travel thru the state, and the best part is that it tells you which HIGHWAYS lead to them! (With maps showing roads and geological features!) And it's in reader-friendly language too. And Great Photos! I do a lot of travelling & sight-seeing, plus, I'm a Geographer, so for me this book was a MUST HAVE.

I highly recommend it!
