If you have ever looked at the landscape and wondered how it was shaped the Roadside Geology series is for you. On a recent motor trip on I-90 across South Dakota we used this book as a guide to magnificent country we were traveling through. We have many books in the series and they are all well written but this particular one is a stand out.

I used this book as we drove E-W across SD from Sioux Falls to Rapid City and beyond. As in all the roadside geology series the writing is aimed at the interested layman which includes plenty of basic geology principles along with detailed geologic information using the geology of the state as the foundation for the presentation. I am a trained geoscientist by background and find the information presented in the book useful and accurate. The only detraction is that the book is relatively old (1996) so doesn't cover some of the most recent petroleum industry in this part of the country--hence only 4 stars. But if you have an interest in understanding the whys of the scenery you are passing, even if you are not a scientist, these books are really the ticket. Makes the time go by a little faster too!

I love this book. I have found things I never knew were in the state. And, believe me, I'm a major booster of SD! I've traveled there, or through there, probably 15-20 times. Great place, reasonably priced (except around Bike Week in Sturgis, First full week in August), lots to see and do.

I took a chance and purchased this book in addition to a travel guide. It is organized by highway east to west and north to south. I seemed to be travelling just opposite, so it was a little hard to follow. The information was interesting, although I had a hard time following what is a Brule formation versus a Pierre formation. It includes some facts and history that I enjoyed. To put it in perspective, I am not a geologist and only somewhat interested in rocks and sediment.

The book is quite technical and not for the average reader, but I readily found it at Amazon. It was shipped promptlly and the condition is excellent.

Like the entire series, this book could only be improved if a list of fossil and mineral collecting sites were included.
