Best-selling author Carl Hiaasen describes Mañana: "A … thriller that moves through Mexico like a scalded sidewinder As always, Hjortsberg delivers wild surprises, cool chatter and raw, unforgettable scenes."

Book Description

Sheriff Lester P. Morrison is nearing retirement. He loves the peace and quiet of his small hometown where a particularly exciting night would be a a petty theft at a convenience store or maybe a drunken family squabble. Never in his wildest imagination did the Sheriff think he would become involved in an al-Qaeda plot to kill the President of the United States, not in Cimarron County, the least populated county in Oklahoma.

But that’s exactly what happens when a terrorist with a trunk full of explosives crashes his car on an icy road just outside of Boise City. Lester has a bad feeling about the mysterious, dark-skinned stranger with the full black beard, but Deputy Billy Ray Ledbetter shrugs it off as nothing more than a foolish hunch from a suspicious old man…until they find the unconscious owner of the tow truck lying in a pool of blood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read October 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you’re looking for the next great American novel, this isn’t it. But if you want a few hours of pure entertainment this is the right book for you. I have read all three of Mr. Williams’s books and I have enjoyed each one. This man can spin a yarn. I like the rural Oklahoma dialect and the easy laid back style in which these books are written. Also there was a guest appearance from one of the characters in his book No Refuge, and a UN honorable mention of one from Fraidy Hole, which gives it a feel of a continuance in the series. I hope to see more stories in the adventure of Lester P. Morrison.

If you are a fan of mystery and suspense then you should buy this book! The author writes in a easy going style that captivates the reader, and makes this a book you will not want to put down. The book never drags, and gives you a glimpse into rural Oklahoma life. The characters come to life, and you find yourself wondering more about them. I look forward to hearing more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just gets better December 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The second book in the series and it just gets better. There were times when I truly had to laugh out loud at some of the country-isms that came out of the sheriff's mouth. But he is endearing and dependable and a good man. A terrorist passes through his country in little ol Oklahoma.....imagine that! But the author makes it seem oh so plausible. I was instantly drawn into the storyline and racing along with the action. Super read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique character's and plot July 18, 2014
By SRMyers
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I never liked reading novels about terrorists until now. Mr. Williams takes a unique approach and one I feel reflects real life. Instead of following the CIA, FBI, or other huge government agency, in "Roadside" you'll read about a sheriff in a very small department trying his best to convince someone the President's life is in danger and, when this doesn't happen, he takes matters into his own hands. As always, Mr. Williams includes the regional dialect, character's personal lives, and a bit of fun to create a story that's about down-to-earth, normal people doing extraordinary things. - Sheila Rae Myers, Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Lester and Billy Ray. Action! December 19, 2013
Warren Williams continues to tell a good story. The narrative is fast paced and action packed with just the right amount of rural Oklahoma humor. I think any new reader should first peruse “Fraidy Hole” and have more background on Lester and Billy Ray. Carmella seems too much of a “flighty” sort for Lester’s tastes, at least long term. But then this author is full of surprises. This is indeed perfect for the big screen or A&E’s Longmire. Keep writing Mr. Williams!!

Love the sheriff. Not too sure about Carmella. I'm hoping it's a joke that he's making her a deputy. Kinda silly.

More About the Author

The Oklahoma Panhandle, once known as No Man's Land, is the stompin' ground of my favorite protagonist, Sheriff Lester P. Morrison. Lester and I became friends in my first novel, No Refuge, when he shows up near the end of the story to help the good guys catch the bad guys. He's been with us ever since.

When I'm not writing about Lester, I'm in the field with a camera pursuing my other passion, nature photography. I've visited numerous national wildlife refuges, thirty national parks, and forty-one states, as well as Ecuador and Africa.

In my spare time, I love to work in Photoshop.

Like Lester, I once had a lab named Harley. I still miss him.
