almost ready for prime time, April 4, 2009

This is for the most part a well designed and built system. The batteries seem to hold a charge well and in 7 months of occasional use I've not had any problems until last week. The collar will not turn on now. Ive returned the unit to the manufacturer in Minnesota.The gentleman that I spoke with in customer service (when you call, you get a real person immediately), was very accomodating and professional at the same time. I anticipate a quick resolution to the problem. That said, I do wish that the handheld receiver was not as bulky and/or that it came with a holster. It does fit into my jacket pocket but I have trouble getting my hand back in to get it out. In the summer when I'm not wearing a coat or jacket, I have to hold the receiver for the duration of a five mile hike. It won't fit into a jeans or shorts pocket, unless you have cargo pants. The range of up to one mile is adequate for me, but I could forsee situations where a greater range would be desirable. I have noticed that a dense forest canopy slows the tracking process,but does not by any means disable it.(In winter,with leaves down,tracking does not slow as much.) Overall,I would purchase the Roameo system again.
