5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Narnia - no comparison
First, let me say I do not work for the publisher, nor do I know the authors. But I own almost every Christian book on this topic, as well as Disney/Walden Media's official movie guide and Barnes & Noble's Narnia SparkNotes.

This book has the best summary of the Chronicles of Narnia. It covers all seven books. It has incredible art, the best discussion...

3.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read, But Lacking Originality
Roar! is an excellent guide for families searching for external essays on Lewis' children's masterpieces. I found the sections for the parents and children easy to differentiate, and even found parts of the children's sections enjoyable and entertaining to read (this coming from a 22-year old).
But when it comes to some of the essays, I found that there was really...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Narnia - no comparison, February 16, 2006
This review is from: Roar!: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback)

It has incredible art, the best discussion questions, best glossary, best discussion of biblical parallels. It is fun to read and nearly impossible to put down. Even those who dislike reading will love this full-color book. If you love literature, you will find many pages of well-written analysis to fill your soul.

I've read other books that have discussion questions that only a Rhodes scholar could answer, but "Roar!" has thought-provoking topics that will charm every age.

With more than 400 pages and full color throughout, it is an incredible value. It is the best book-length introduction to Narnia on the market. I'm not sure how Multnomah can afford to sell it for $19.99.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific multi-age homeschooling resource, January 4, 2006
This review is from: Roar!: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback)
This book goes through all seven books in "The Chronicles of Narnia" series book by book, chapter by chapter. It includes discussion topics plus interesting word definitions like "blub" means "cry" and how to talk (try to pronouce it "tooowk") like a proper British schoolboy . There is reading for parents at the end of the book. This book makes for a good unit study without your having to prepare topics beforehand. My older children like it (ages 6, 8, and 9).

5.0 out of 5 stars An Informative Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia, October 7, 2005
This review is from: Roar!: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback)
The book contains so much information about the Chronicles of Narnia. Yet, the best part is the book's format. It is not a dull learning tool. Using the book is recreation. Martin French's illustrations are so colorful and full of energy. Look at the book's cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide to the Narnia Series!, November 10, 2005
This review is from: Roar!: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback)
We recently purchased the Narnia series and began reading it with our kids. We found this guide to be a useful way to engage our kids in the Narnia series - it makes plain what Lewis was meaning, provides definitions for words and phrases no longer in use and makes a fun and interactive way for our kids to remember key plot developments.

The illustrations are absolutely incredible and because the book covers the entire series, I'm confident it's something we'll use for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Cool!, June 10, 2006
This review is from: Roar!: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback)
I would have loved having this book around when I was a kid, and I find it a useful tool as a parent to start discussions with my kids. For family devotions, when I want my kids to settle down and not be distracted, I find FOLLOWING ASLAN by Kenneth McIntosh makes best use of the Narnia-Gospel connections. The simplicity of his book works at bedtime--while Roar! is a great car-ride book, a waiting-for-a-doctor's-appointment book, and a distraction-for-a-kid-who's-bored-with-being sick book. There are just so many things to look at and talk about!

This book was really a surprise for me. It covers all seven of the Narnia books chapter by chapter. It also has a lot of other information regarding Narnia, from listings of characters to Biblical allusions. I found some of the scholarly essays to be rather fascinating! (What do you make of all the wine and spirits that flow in a children's book?) We are reading the Narnia series together as a family and stop at each chapter to discuss the questions in "ROAR!" It has provided some great discussions and made me think twice about some of my own answers. My kids reread the books after we complete them together and "ROAR" is always nearby. We may have to buy another soon as our current copy of "ROAR!" is in danger of being read to death!

Excellent discussion guide for anyone wishing to follow Christ. This book is a wonderful help - not only for a deeper understanding of the Chronicles of Narnia, but for seeing Jesus, and the Word of God in these books. In depth essays of important discussion topics, and thought provoking questions throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Resource, June 24, 2010
This review is from: Roar!: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback)
First let me say that right now you can get this book for $1.99 or (50 cents if you get 3 or more) at [...]. I asked why and the lady said they were going out of print so buy it up fast if you want it. I'd buy at least 2 so you can copy the Narniac Tests found in the back and if the book falls apart you already have another one. (Yes, you can copy it- the author tells you to so you can take it again and again or have multiple people take it.) There's also supposed to be a website where you can download it but I have been unsuccessful in finding that page. We made certificates and prizes for the different levels. There are 2 tests-one for younger guys and one for older guys. (No, I do not work for ChristianBook. I am not associated with any publishers etc just a homeschooling mother of 6 and Narnia fan.)

My kids had a blast with this book. When I'd pull out our Narina books. They'd all shush each other "shh it's Narnia!" In addition to vocabulary (indispensable at times), and short review questions, there are added activity sections that help you understand a bit more about the characters. Our most memorable one I think is "How to be a Dufflepud". My kids still remember and do it every now and then. I paired this book with A Family Guide To Narnia: Biblical Truths in C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia by Christin Ditchfield for my older kids as I felt they needed a bit more in depth study of Biblical truths that younger children may not want to sit for. So if you're looking for biblical paralells that would be the better buy. Personally, knowing about these books I wouldn't do without either one.

We started our Narnia with the Vocabulary from ROAR. Then read the chapter followed by any questions or activities from ROAR. Sometimes there is an "ear exam" (how well were you listening) or a short Narniac Test. All of these we did orally. At this point I would let the younger children go or stay as their heart dictated and we went through the Biblical Truths from "A Family Guide to Narnia."

Both books were invaluable tools for us and you will not regret buying them. They are a permanent part of our Narnia collection.

We also have "Chronicles of Narnia Comprehension Guide" by Veritas Press ([...]). This one is mostly comprehension questions but it also has games you can re-create to carry on the Narnia fun and even the recipe for Cock-A-Leekie Soup which Jill and Eustace eat at the Giant's home in "The Silver Chair". Some of the games are Reepi-Chess (variations on rules that make chess very interesting), Find Prince Rilian game among others.

We absolutely love and enjoy all of our Narnia books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful study guide to the Chronicles of Narnia!, March 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Roar!: A Christian Family Guide to the Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback)
Roar is a beautifully put together study guide to read along side of the 7 Chronicle books. Each chapter of each book has two pages of questions about the chapter. Not the "were taking a quiz on if you were listening" questions, but intriguing, thought provoking, discussion provoking questions about morals, feelings, and ultimately right from wrong in God's eyes. There are little quips about CS Lewis as a kid, and how he came up with ideas, and many pages of silly things for kids like "How to know if you are a Narniac"! Each chapter offers a tidbit just for the parents for biblical reading. The pages are scattered with little verses from the bible that coincide with that particular chapter's reading along with "look this up" so you can get your bibles out and read what Lewis wants to show you. There is so much more that I cannot mention without making this become far too much to read! If your kids liked the movies, I promise they will love the series of books even better. And if you couple the books with Roar, you'll find your family having some of the most wonderfully deep discussions about life, The Lord, Heaven, good vs evil, friendship, modern day problems, wars and love. We plan on using this guide, Roar, and reading through the 7 Chronicle books again next year. It was such an enjoyable time.
