5.0 out of 5 stars Great music to read The Chronicles by!
I received this as a gift for Christmas after wanting it for years and years but never managing to get around to picking up my copy. I LOVE it! Think rock opera with a 1970's easy-listening slant. But the best part: it's about Narnia.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good CD, but missing a track!
Interesting CD from my childhood, but one of the tracks is missing! Track 7, Gifts From Father Christmas, is listed, lyrics and all, but is not actually on the CD. If you're looking for the complete album, you'll have to look elsewhere.

I received this as a gift for Christmas after wanting it for years and years but never managing to get around to picking up my copy. I LOVE it! Think rock opera with a 1970's easy-listening slant. But the best part: it's about Narnia.

If you haven't read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," you can't fully appreciate this album. So many things are alluded to but never really explained, and you have to know the story to figure out what's going on. But the songs do cover most of the main plot points, and give you some real time to think about some aspects of the story. Several of the songs nearly bring me to tears when I really listen to it; part of the appeal of the stories about Narnia is how emotionally involved one gets with the characters and situations.

To comment on what another reviewer said... all of the tracks are actually on the CD (in fact, it would be very difficult to leave one off because there are very few breaks between songs!) The tracks are misnumbered on the CD itself, so "Gifts from Father Christmas" is, on the CD, actually on the tag-end of the "Christmas Where Are You" track.

This album is a slam dunk for a Narnia fan. The music is beautiful (if sometimes a bit dated... it IS a soft rock album from the 70's, after all!) and the lyrics are very true to the story. Although a fan of C.S. Lewis' books will enjoy this to its fullest, even someone who hasn't read the books can enjoy the music and the beautiful vocal harmonies of the 2nd Chapter of Acts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timeless gem, May 7, 2003
This review is from: The Roar of Love: A Musical Journey Into the Wonder of C.S. Lewis' Narnia (Audio CD)
I remember hearing this album as a child, one of the few albums of my parents' of which I actually liked, loved. This album has always been dear to my heart. Although I tend to lean towards the harder rock scene, this album brings peace to my heart every time I hear it. I have been searching for it on CD and finally found "The Roar of Love" here at Amazon.com. This album is truly a wonder, of which all should be exposed, at least once.

I received my "Roar of Love" CD in the mail today and it is playing right now! This is the soundtrack of Narnia and my youth. It is all here: the Lamp post, the Witch in her sleigh, the Stone Table and the Lion who is a lamb. If you know and love "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" you will hear it come to life in these songs from 2nd Chapter of Acts.

The "Gifts From Father Christmas," although listed as track 7 is actually at the end of track 6 and is one of my favorites. But for me "I've Heard the Stars Sing Before" is the best; a very "2nd Chapter of Acts" sound without being as 1970's as the "Witch's Demise." The stars singing also harkens the image of the creation of Narnia from "The Magician's Nephew."

I loved this ablum as a kid and now I can enjoy it as a "grown-up" without the skip in the "White Stag" song like my LP had! I can't wait to share the music with my young son when we start reading the Chronicles of Narnia together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are Yoe Going to Narnia?, May 24, 2005
This review is from: The Roar of Love: A Musical Journey Into the Wonder of C.S. Lewis' Narnia (Audio CD)
All of the Tracts ARE there. 6.Christmas Where are you & 7.Gifts From Father Christmas are a "duel tract" as is 12.Witch's Demise/Get it Into Your Head. The only difference is that 12 is listed on the notes that way and 6-7 are not.

Sharing this CD with my daughter was a joy. I love the lyrics. Yes - 70's (Gospel) Rock Opera + Narnia = A True Gem!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just one of the coolest albums ever made, that's all, November 1, 2008

I'm a little sad when I turn on Christian radio stations and hear boring, boring music, most of the time with lyrics that are little more than syrupy drivel. There ARE some fantastic and musically innovative groups making overtly gospel-oriented music these days, but they aren't that popular - and I don't know if any of them approach the talent and impact of The 2nd Chapter of Acts.

Yes, this is dated sounding. Crazy synthesizers/organs, bouncing bass lines, the whole nine yards. But it is darn good.

For starters, the two-sister-one-brother group has the tightest harmonies, widest range, and most flexible voices of any non-classical group that I'm aware of. If you think Dixie Chicks, Avalon, Point of Grace, or any of the newer groups when you think harmony, you're in for a surprise, because none of them can do what 2CoA can do. There are jaw-dropping melodic acrobatics in here.

Secondly, the subject matter is just good to start with. Lewis' story can stand the culture-wrenching transformation from mid-century England to 70's America - not that the album changes the story, but it certainly sets it in a sound that wouldn't come to mind while reading the books. Anne Herring didn't draw on just The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe in writing these lyrics - several lines allude to things you only read about further in the Narnia series.

My only complaint about this album being on CD is that you won't get the fabulous artwork that emblazoned the LP. It was a fold-out cover with beautiful color paintings on all four panels. Luckily I color-copied the sleeve my mother had before it got moldy in the basement...oh well, what we give up for convenience and storage space.

5.0 out of 5 stars Notice how many 5 star reviews there are? :), July 25, 2006
This review is from: The Roar of Love: A Musical Journey Into the Wonder of C.S. Lewis' Narnia (Audio CD)
I cried when I saw all the 5 star reviews and read them. I'm 53 yrs. old and Annie Herring (clearly most responsible for the 2nd Chapter's sound) and her sister and brother are my favorite group of all time. I've cried and worshiped with their music more times than I can count and love them like they're my family ... but hey, they are! :).

Different albums have been my favorites at different times and their music really communicates genuine love for Jesus.

I wish everyone knew and loved their music and their (our) Lord.

BTW, these guys were together for 17 yrs. and haven't recorded together for longer than that. It was sad to hear them announce that the Lord told them to dissolve the group. It was probably at the height of their popularity.

I enjoyed this album immensely when it first came out in the 80's. Now after seeing the movie in the theatre, I purchased it again as I found it has been remastered and put on CD. I LOVE IT. THE SONGS ARE PHENOM! Service from Amazon was great too! Thanks. It was worth every penny. Linda

If you are familiar with the Chronicals of Narnia and you have never heard this music, you should. If it has been awhile for you it is worth another listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music brings story to life, February 22, 2006
This review is from: The Roar of Love: A Musical Journey Into the Wonder of C.S. Lewis' Narnia (Audio CD)
This CD offers '70's vintage sounds to re-tell the fabulous story of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The Second Chapter of Acts do an incredible job creating music that makes you feel like you're walking in the characters' shoes, experiencing their adventures. Each song captures the spirit of the part of the story it re-tells, and the harmony and musical talent of this group continues to inspire. I love this CD as much as my kids.

I hope this CD will receive more attention now that the Narnia movie has been released. It is an excellent musical retelling of C. S. Lewis' THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE by one of the most innovative bands in the history of contemporary Christian music. The Second Chapter of Acts has been a favorite with me and my family for years. This CD specifically is one of their most creative efforts, and though it was recorded 25 years ago it continues to be fresh and engaging. I hope a lot of you invest in this CD; it's worth every penny!
