Murdocks Come Roaring Back,
By
This review is from: Roar (Audio CD)
Well goddamn. The Murdocks prove they aren't just a one (or none) hit wonder. I frankly wouldn't have even heard of them if I hadn't heard one of their songs on Pandora. I bought their CD and was blown away. Since they haven't really hit the national stage, I was worried they wouldn't come out with another CD, but when they did, I jumped on it immediately, and boy am I glad I did. They rock as hard as any band out there, and their songs are catchy as hell. To some extent, they remind me of Green Day, with the sound and style of their new Foxboro Hot Tubs outing, with the energy of the old, punk Green Day. However, this is in no way a bad thing, and indeed they bring enough of their own to the table to keep things interesting. So basically, you should all buy this CD so they can start touring outside of Texas.

One of indie rock's gems.,

This EP is an excellent piece of modern rock music. From the bright chords of the opening track "Playhouse Down" to the final shouts of "Boy", the EP calls to mind the music of the past 4 generations. The EP points out the diversity of the band's style, from the trebly Playhouse Down, to the catchy Old Sylophone, to the infectious Die Together. I found myself attempting to sing along to the final chorus of the song, despite the fact I didn't know the lyrics. This EP is a big difference from the Murdocks debut, Surrenderender. While Surrenderender was a great record in itself (and one of my favorites), the tracks were often marked by a heavier sound, more reminiscent of Nirvana, perhaps not surprising considering when the members of The Murdocks grew up. The album had its gems, such as Dance the Vomit Shakes, one of my personal favorite songs. However, with Roar!, (and a new lineup) any worries of a 90's rip-off can be quickly dismissed. Singer Franklin Morris weaves in and out of his chords with intricate, catchy melodies in his unique voice, bassist Kyle Robarge swiftly enforces the low-end, and drummer David Jones keeps the band in time with skillful drumming, knowing exactly what is necessary to add to the song. It seems with each release, the Murdocks impress me more and more. If I'm allowed to make any one prediction, it's that, soon enough, you'll be tapping your foot to a Murdocks song on the radio. Pick up Roar! while you can.

Saw them live and bought this album. They had a great energy playing live and it carries through to the cd. If you enjoy listening to music, I would recommend this EP.
