4.0 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie, January 28, 2008

This novel is the second in Wilbur Smith's saga of the Courtney's of Africa. It follows "When the Lion Feeds".
In this book the Courtney brothers, Sean and Garry, continue their feud with Anna making the situation worse between them. Sean has returned from across the Limpopo with wagons of Ivory, and finds himself caught in Johannesburg (a Boer city) at the beginning of the Boer War with the English. Since he is English, he must escape to Natal province or be captured and imprisoned. He has to sell his ivory for a pittance, leave all his possessions and ride at night through Boer lines in the attempt. The story continues with wonderfully written battle action, a touch of romance, and problems he encounters after the war.

These books are so well written, nonstop action, accurate historical setting, believable characters. Wilbur Smith's first books are GREAT. I do not enjoy his current writing nearly as much, but the Courtney books, the Ballantyne books, all his work prior to the Egyptian work is terrific.
