Roaring Glory Video a Must For Corsair Fans, December 28, 1999
This review is from: Roaring Glory Warbirds - Vought Corsair F4U [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Roaring Glory and Speedvision have done it again with this fine quality warbird check-out video. Steve Hinton of Fighter Rebuilders, (Chino, CA)does a fine job of narrating and flying the Planes of Fame F4U1 Corsair. Hinton is a logical choice to fill the big shoes of late warbird expert Jeff Ethell. Steve is one of the most knowledgable and experienced warbird pilots and restoration experts in the world today. His narration drones a bit and takes on a monotone at times, but he makes up for it with his insightful observations and comments about the Corsair. The video starts out with some flying sequences, then settles down to business with a pre-flight walkaround on the ramp at warbird mecca, Chino, CA. Next, we get a very good pre-flight check from the cockpit, complete with excellent shots of instrument and control layout. Following engine crank, we get a beautiful takeoff shot complete with Dolby sound so that the viewer can fully appreciate the roar of the mighty Pratt & Whitney R2800. Heading upstairs, Steve familiarizes us with aileron rolls, stalls and gear extension/retraction. Going down low, we get some truly exciting images of the big Navy bird hugging the rolling green hills of southern California. This sequence here is almost worth the price of the tape! The historical aspect of the Corsair isn't forgotten as it is interspersed with rare footage of the F4U in action during WWII and Korea. My only criticism is that we are treated to only one low-level, high-speed pass. Numerous buzz jobs should have been included in this otherwise excellent video. Four solid stars are well deserved though.

Roaring Glory's Corsair Video Is Right On Target, December 28, 1999
This review is from: Roaring Glory Warbirds - Vought Corsair F4U [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This 1998 production lives up to the high standards set by the late Jeff Ethell. Hosted by Steve Hinton of "Planes of Fame" and "Fighter Rebuilders" of Chino, CA, the video presents the viewer with a good deal of beautifully shot aerial action. Steve begins with a preflight walk-around of the "Planes of Fame" F4U1 Corsair, then, its into the cockpit for the pre-start checklist. It gives many of us our first clear view of this warbird's roomy cockpit and how the instruments and controls are laid-out. Next is the dramatic takeoff with full Dolby sound, so that we can better appreciate that Pratt and Whitney R2800 radial. Mr. Hinton's narrator voice, can at times be a little droning, but he is without a doubt, one of the most experienced and knowledgable warbird pilots alive today, having flown practically every kind of fighter to ever see action in World War II. Aerial shots are impressive with a good mix of inside-the-cockpit shots. This big Navy bird just looks terrific at one point as Steve flies it low over the green rolling hills of southern California. My only criticism is that there is only one low-level, high-speed pass for us to gawk at. Three or four would have been more like it. All things condsidered, though, this video is a definite must for Corsair fans, with lots of previous unseen World War II footage of the bent-winged bird. Four solid Stars for sure!

Vought F4U Corsair - Roaring Glory vol 7., October 1, 2001
This review is from: Roaring Glory Warbirds - Vought Corsair F4U [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you are a fan of big radial engines in WW2 warbirds then this video is for you. Steve Hinton, a well known plane restorer and racer, takes us through the big birds paces starting with a typical preflight around the plane. Steve then climbs aboard, runs through the cockpit arrangement, fires her up and taxis to the end of the Planes of Fame airstrip. After taking off, Steve shows us the planes excellent flight capabilities and noting some of its limitations. Overall an excellent video, although a little short and for me not enough high speed flybys. However you will be impressed with Steves technical knowledge and the ease with which he delivers it. Oh yes, you get a short story involving a young WW2 pilot and his first flight in a Corsair.
