Didn't like either of the main characters, October 6, 2007
This review is from: Roarke's Folly (Harlequin Historical, No 250) (Paperback)
From the back cover:
What could a nobelman want with a woman of her station?
A cloth merchant's daughter, Adela lived a life of responsibility. Little color was there to the fabric of her dreams until the day an impudent knight with mischeif in his eyes began to untangle the threads of her resistance...
A man of principle, Roarke d'Aalgen had bargained to retain his family honor. But he had not counted on the lovely Adela, a woman who scoffed at his seduction and fired his desire to the boiling point!
And my review:
After reading, a loving, Claire Delaxcroix's books
Enchanted, I eagerly snapped up her other books. Now I wish I hadn't bothered, because it seems as if ENCHANTED was just a fluke.
At first, this novel started off well. I like watching the interaction between these two. I like how Adela took Roarke down a peg. He was so self-assured, with an annoying "every woman is just dying to sleep with me" attitude, so he deserved to be enamored with a woman who was not at all impressed by his swaggering act. His arrogance made me not like him, though.
But what turned me off the heroine was when she spits on him after knocking him out. He definitely deserved to have a dent put in his image, but to spit on him was a bit too much. It's not like the guy tried to rape her--he was trying to seduce her. To punch him out, and the spit on him while he's out cold and unable to defend himself? A bit much. Totally deserved if he was trying to force himself on her, but he wasn't. A "no, leave me the hell alone" would have sufficed. It pushed the heroine past the "spirited" level and on to "shrewish". And I can't stand shrewish heroines anymore than I can stand arrogant heros.
I recommend ENCHANTED, but that's about the only thing I recommend by this author. I doubt I'll be reading any of her books in the future. I would only recommend this if you're a hard-core fan of this writer and want to complete your collection.

Good novel for a rainy day, November 23, 2010
This review is from: Roarke's Folly (Harlequin Historical, No 250) (Paperback)
Roarke's Folly by Claire Delacroix is a good novel for a rainy day, just to get away from reality for a while. The story is about a knight, Roarke d'Aalgen, who bargains for his family's pride (unbeknownst to his family); he accepts a position with a cloth-maker to work off the debt, but is surprised when the owner's daughter ends up being the very maiden he tried (and failed) to seduce. Beautiful, innocent Adela catches Roarke off guard, and they find themselves growing very enamored of each other. Not a whole lot of action, but a nice get-away.
