Editorial Reviews

Rob Me Blind, Jay Brannan's second studio album, showcases a more intricately produced side of the singer-songwriter. Recorded by renowned producer David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, The Bangles). Jay first turned heads in the acclaimed film Shortbus with the performance of his song "Soda Shop." Soon after, he released his critically acclaimed debut album goddamned in 2008 and his follow-up album In Living Cover in 2009. Both album releases were followed by sold-out dates around the world and a continual growing, devout online fan community.

In the sleeve notes for this CD, Jay Brannan says, "I am scared, I am insecure, and I only believe in myself on really good days." I'm sad about that because it's not a good way for anyone to feel. On the other hand, if those feelings can produce art like the art on this CD, I'm just callous enough to say, "Suck it up, Jay, and sing."

Whatever you call the level of talent slightly above genius (and I'm sorry I'm not better at hyperbole), that's what Jay's got musically. Whether it's the blazing, multi-faceted poetry with its quirky, completely unexpected but totally apt images, or the wide-ranging melodies with their lovely little falsetto flips, or the headlong, sometimes impacted rush of phrasing, or the endlessly inventive accompaniment figures of the guitar, or the clever arrangements that seem to rise out of almost nothing, there is nothing on this CD that is not totally brilliant. And to cap it all, there's the dry-eyed yet heartfelt, vulnerable yet resilient, snarky but oh-so-sweet singing of Jay.

A little heartache and pain aside, what's not to love?

This third album from Jay is absolutely amazing! I cannot express enough (but I'll try) how much I recommend people pick up Rob Me Blind. His growth as an artist really shows on this album. He moves slightly away from the straight acoustic songs with this album. But fear not, they quality of music you expect from him is still, it just layered with more instruments and orchestration. Jay's music has always touched my heart. As a fellow gay man, I really appreciate the honesty he puts in his music about relationships with men and his observations of the world around him. His songs have often mirrored my own thoughts and experiences and express them in a way I never could. Jay continues to shine and impress. This albums version of `Beautifully' is amazing!! `Rob Me Blind' is probably my favorite new song from this album, but there are plenty of outstanding tracks, like `The Spanglish Song,' `Greatest Hists,' 'Love Story,' 'State of Music' and, well really, they're all great!

With every new album/EP Jay just keeps getting better. The production on this album is top notch. Love hearing the strings and drums and piano and all the eclectic styles that sneak in and out of this new batch of songs. Fun, heartfelt, talented. But you've got to see him live!

Highlights:

La La La - awesome and hilarious
Denmark - one of my favorites from his youtube page FINALLY made an album
State of Music - the shout outs, especially for my girl Ani DiFranco
The live album for download - Been dying for him to release some live tracks and this takes the cake. Album tracks, b sides and live covers of Adele and Nicki Minaj! Classic.

Second full length CD from Jay Brannan finally arrives after his debut Goddamned from a few years back.
It's a nice small album, but over way too soon, two or three tracks more would have been nice, for example the christmas songs or soda pop.

Also, I did not receive the Limited Edition from Amazon, while they still list it as such.
The difference is a standard cd-case instead of digipack
Simple booklet instead of 24-pages
And no digital download code for the live album...

Wielding a whispery tenor and an acoustic guitar Jay Brannan introduces his second full length album of original material. A true American story of success, Brannan's self released records boast lyrics that are both nectarine sweet and politically pointed. With Rob Me Blind, Brannan succeeds in creating a genuine work of lyrical art. Each track speaks to the various levels of love. The ability to love, be loved, and desire love are visited by Brannan as he travels his musical landscape. Beginning the journey in loneliness "Everywhere There's Statues" softly crescendos into the arms of untouchable limestone statues welcoming us in. Brannan sings "everywhere there's statues with their arms open wide, surrounded by fences, that you can't get inside," and you can feel the cold against your skin as a longing for human connection is thwarted. In "The Spanglish Song" Brannan confesses a lustful desire for a new Hispanic beau and the childish hook that confesses his desire to make love and marry conicides nicely with the playful nature that a new crush entails. Following in toe, the title track darkly conveys a love that engrosses and encompasses your thoughts despite being ruinous. The most inspiring tracks come from "Greatest Hits," "Denmark," and "Myth of Happiness." "Greatest Hits" sends the listener floating away into self reflection as Brannan sings "you may never be happy." The song asks the question, what's so wrong with the bad stuff? The mistakes, faux pas, and degradation of our pasts are the pieces that make up who we are and....that's ok. "Denmark" announces a new love that Brannan simply can't live without. Despite distance and government this is his "one." The track is not overly sappy, but instead determined and straightforward, as a declaration of love should be.Read more ›

I've been following Jay since Shortbus and saw him in concert in San Diego as well. The fact that this new CD is so splendid does not surprise me at all. Since the beginning he's had not only talent, insight and the desire to actually create art, he's shown all the signs of an artist that would evolve over time much like many of the singer/songwriters did from "my" era in the 60s and 70s. How was that for a long sentence? I think we have much more to look forward to from him and I'm glad for his burgeoning success. I can only hope he will reach the level of success or more so than so many pap performers of today (names will go unmentioned). Keep writing those soulful songs Jay. I look forward to your amazing story. I'm in San Francisco now so hopefully will get to see you again. Support this artist! Jay is the real deal! Did you hear? The REAL deal!! - signed, Gene
