This long-distance walk from Drymen to Pitlochry was developed by Rucksack Readers in partnership with walking enthusiasts. It runs for 79 miles (126 km) along some of Scotland's finest lochs and glens, using historic footpaths, a cycle route, forest tracks and some minor road. Many places are linked with Scotland's most famous outlaw, Rob Roy MacGregor (1671-1734). The route has no official status, but was negotiated with private landowners, Forest Enterprise, Stirling and Perth Councils and others. The Way offers superb views, but is less strenuous than the West Highland Way. It is not fully waymarked as such, but the book gives detailed directions and most of it is straightforward. Walkers are always advised to carry a compass, but are unlikely to need it unless walking an exposed section in winter. This book contains all you need to plan and enjoy your holiday: background on Rob Roy MacGregor, history, heritage and wildlife; summary of each section showing distance, terrain and food/drink stops; drop-down map showing the whole route in five panels; visitor attractions and hills to climb (Munros, Corbetts and Grahams); special notes for people with no previous experience; planning information for travel by car, train, bus or plane; foreword by Sir David Steel, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament; in full colour, with over 60 photographs; waterproof paper throughout.

Jacquetta Megarry is an enthusiastic walker turned publisher. She devised the Rucksack Reader format in 2000 to suit the needs of hikers, and in 2001 she developed the route of the Rob Roy Way in partnership with another keen walker.

This is an indispensible guide to the walk. You won't be able to do the walk without it because there are very few signposts along the Rob Roy Way. But beware of two things: you will have a hard time doing this walk with this guidebook from the north to south direction. It's geared for the south to north direction, and unless you have other sources you'll lose the trail if you're walking it the N-S way. ALSO, this guidebook does NOT include the optional arm to Amulree that is discussed on the website. Print out the instructions from the website before you go. You can (and should)also get a contour map of that optional arm of the hike from a tourist or outdoor store (I believe it's #387). You will NOT be able to find the Amulree trail without a good map, and this guidebook doesn't include it. You will also have a hard time finding the Amulree trail with just a contour map, so print out the website instructions before you leave! Found this out the hard way.
