Blues Harp Master with a totally unique style,
By A Customer
This review is from: With the Robben Ford Band (Audio CD)
No other harp player sounds like Mark Ford, period. Comparisons: faster than Popper, as inventive with harp as Jeff Beck is with guitar, as capable of melody and time signature magic as Dave Brubeck and as capable of smashing your eardrums as Ted Nugent. Yeah, you guessed it. I like this guy--and this is some of his best, most inventive material. I use this collection of tunes to break my friends of all their preconceptions about what a 10 hole harp is and what it's capable of sounding like. If you love blues harp, or if you love jazz, or if you love balls to the wall flash rock'n'roll this album has some material you just ought not to miss hearing. Be brave, buy this CD and then you can impress your friends with your discovery. My favorite tunes? The stunning remakes of Little Walter's *Mellow Down Easy*, and Canned Heats *On the Road Again*, Ain't Got Dough and...oh heck...it's hard to pick faves on this one. There isn't a bad tune on the thing.

This is without doubt Marks best work, every song is tastefully performed. I have listened to it so much that i will soon need to purchase another. I also recommend The Charles Ford Band on the Arhoolie label recorded in 1972 when Mark was only 16.Marks older brother Patricks band"The Ford Blues Band" is outstanding.Check out EVERYTHING they have out.I have them all and play them all the time.Enjoy!!

A west coast blues legend,

Mark has been wowing audiences in the Bay Area with his instrumental technique for many years. This album features his stunning rock harmonica with effortless execution. Every harp solo tells a story. Mark is supported by a solid rhythm section headed by his brother Robben on guitar. I can't give this five stars because there is something not quite on the money with Marks vocals. Heartfelt, passionate and well written but a little 'pitchy' at times. If you're a harp player or fan of the instrument this CD is a must have.

Awesome CD,

I have had this CD for some time. This CD got ruined and I needed to replace it. I love this CD and my favorite song is "Heartbreakin Blues". There is no equal to the way Mark Ford does this song. LOVE THIS CD. (Did I mention this before?)

Great combination,

Mark and Robben Ford combine well on this album. There are outstanding tracks and some ordinary. Without Robben on guitar, the album would not have the same impact. The harp from Mark is outstanding but Robben's guitar is the best feature. Mark's voice is so similar to Robben that I had to keep reading the album notes to really believe it was not Robben. Occasionally ventures into Jazz which I personally find abrasive to my blues tastes. The best harp tracks are the Willie Dixon's 'Mellow Down Easy', 'Up and Out' and 'Up from the streets'. Listen to 'Heart Breakin Blues' for some great Robben guitar and 'On the Road again' for great rocking blues harp and guitar.
