Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Glenda Feathers, a chicken, arrives at her friends Harry and Lola's Diamond Dog Diner with a basket of eggs and the shocking news that there are diamond robbers in town. She urges Lola to hide her diamonds in the eggs. The nefarious robbers show up at the dinner and discover the eggs, which they steal, along with Glenda Feathers, who they assume is responsible for laying the diamond-filled eggs. Fortunately, Glenda Feathers manages to save the day; the diamonds are returned to Lola, and the robbers are arrested. Unfortunately, the book's energetic illustrations and the jerky, slapdash story-line would probably work better as a comic strip; the picture book format seems to confine the action, rendering it static.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3 Glenda Feathers, a chicken who makes her living delivering eggs, warns her canine friends, Lola and Harry, owners of the Diamond Dog Diner, that there are diamond robbers in their town. (Lola always wears diamonds as she cooks to make the food taste better.) Glenda, known for her feather-brained ideas, hides Lola's diamonds inside the eggs that she has delivered to the diner. The thieves, thinking that Glenda lays diamond-filled eggs, kidnap her and the eggs. In the end, Glenda tricks the robbers and is rescued by her friends. The colorful and expressive illustrations expand upon and extend the text. The scenes in the diner are particularly funny, as a sheep, a pig, and dogs sit at booths and the counter reading newspapers and drinking coffee, and chicken puns add to the humor. Most children will know someone who, like Glenda, just can't keep a secret, and they'll enjoy her clever idea for being rescued. The book reads well aloud, and it is well suited to primary grade independent reading. Gayle Celezic, Roosevelt School, Cleveland
