Whatever Happened To...?,
By
This review is from: Robbie Nevil (Audio CD)
I'll be the first to write a review on what I think of as a lost talented artist's debut. Robbie Nevil came out of nowhere in 1986 with "C'est La Vie" which I really didn't care for at that time, but with his next single, "Dominoes", I was sold. When I bought the cassette tape I listened to it over and over again. At the age of 14 I felt Nevil's debut was very good. There still isn't a song on this album that's a toss-off. I also liked "Simple Life", "Look Who's Alone Tonight", "Just A Little Closer" and "Back To You". His third single "Wot's It To Ya" was also a minor hit and well done. I don't think too many people know who Robbie Nevil is anymore, but it seemed to me that his career ended prematurely. He followed this debut with another solid album 1988's "A Place Like This" and then his final album 1991's "Day 1". I own all three on cd. I bought them before they went out of print. I suppose that Nevil sounded somewhat like Michael Jackson in terms of his voice and music, but he truly was his own talent. Find this one, or any of his other two in your local used cd store--it's worth the hunt.

Loved it,

This was one of the best debut albums by any artist ever! Robbie Nevil should have been a huge success and I can't believe his music is out of print compared to some of the total crap that survives from this time period.

Forgotten talent,
By
This review is from: Robbie Nevil (Audio CD)
This debut from Robbie in 1986 made me very intrested in his work. The production was (and still is) fantastic when I listen to it today. He's not only a good writer, he's also a good musician and producer. C`est La Vie was the BIG hit and made him a superstar (for a short while). But the album is packed with minor hits like Dominoes and What's It To Ya and proved that Robbie is an artist that should have been up there with George Michael or even Prince at the top in the 80's.
Now, lookin back, it's no doubt that Robbie is "forgotten talent". He produced three good albums and this is a classic YOU shouldn't miss.

A Gifted Artist...,

Robbie Nevil is an incredibly gifted singer/songwriter/musician. It's a real shame that he isn't as famous he deserves to be. Upon purchasing his CD's and listening to them, I came away feeling slightly saddened by the fact that tremendous talent like Mr. Nevil are almost always overlooked in favor of what's basically commercial and what sells. I do wish Mr. Nevil all the best. If you can find his recordings, please purchase them. I promise, you will not be dissapointed!!!

I'm so happy I found this CD since I only had this album on tape. This album is one of my favourites of the eighties, I just wonder why it didn't sell more than it did. In my opinion it's a great production and all the ten songs are really good, not great but good.

An Amazing Artist From the 80's With a Remarkable Debut!,
By
This review is from: Robbie Nevil (Audio CD)
This was the album in 1986 that stood out for me as far as thinking in terms of what blue-eyed 80's R&B, pop-soul meant(though, music truly has or knows no boundaries with regards to ethnicity). There were also traces of a VERY familiar sound production I had heard before but could not pin point until I read who the producer was---Alex Sadkin who had previously worked with Duran Duran and the Thompson Twins and even Grace Jones in the early 80's(you can hear,instrumentation-wise,echoes of "The Union of the Snake" and "Lies", "Love Lies Bleeding" from Duran Duran and the Thomspon Twins in this production). It was a perfect combination of Nevil's unique and talented trademark song writing, vocals, and musicianship and Sadkin's producing and engineering feats that created one helluva perfect team for a finely crafted debut. The entire album possessed an atmospheric quality to it---just listen to the opening track, Dominoes, Look Who's Alone Tonight as prime examples.
Previously, Nevil had written songs for The Pointer Sisters and Vanity among a few other acts in the mid 80's; Now, it was his turn to put forth his own remarkable album that contained very infectious and memorable grooves: C'est La Vie, Dominoes, Wot's It To Ya,Limousines,Just A Little Closer.Who can forget the mysterious video for Dominoes about a seductress of the night! Just fantastic lyrics and vivid imagery in that song alone(with or without the video). There was always something soulful to Nevil's vocal style---a very cool and natural falsetto that some compared to Michael Jackson's---Nevil could sing it without making it sound like a caricature/parody of said vocal style. His singing coupled with his manner of music writing made one think he was absolutely going to have a very long lasting solo career and produce more albums well past the decade of the 90's;Unfortunately, it was not to be. I, also, own his other two out of print albums. While they stand up great in their own merit, it's his self-titled debut that I listen to more of(an import metal mastered vinyl and the first pressing of the cd). It would be great to have this cd re-issued and re-mastered with bonus tracks,re-mixes and even possible alternate tracks, unreleased material of the recording session that never made it to the final product.

Every song on this album is terrific - soulful, up-tempo, original. I have this album on cassette and had played it so many times over the years that it finally started to wear out. I started looking for it on CD in stores to no avail. When I couldn't find any of these songs on iTunes either I thought replacing my old cassette was in peril of being a lost cause. I found it on a new CD at amazon.com! Yay!

This is a great cd from the original 1986-1987 years which in my view the music is timeless. I however would have liked to have the extended version of the song C'EST LA VIE for nostalgic reasons and rarity. Come on Amazon make it happen.
