Robbie Williams at his best!!!,
By "meike-cincinnati" (Cincinnati, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Robbie Williams Show (DVD)
You can think of Robbie Williams what you want- he was and is one of the most entertaining people in the biz. His jokes with the audience (and at this particular concert there were only 300 people admitted) are absolutely hilarious! The "RW Show" was his first live performance after "Swing when you're winning" (another must-have) and in the documentary you can see how nervous he is. He presents old hits (Strong, Rock DJ, Angels..) as well as many songs from his (at that point) unreleased album "Escapology". He flirts with the audience, laughs at himself (e.g. when his guitar solo does not go the way it should) and makes sure that the 1h 30min show does seem way too short. My favourites on the DVD are "Strong" (I like how he changes the words), "Hot Fudge" (nice dance action) and "Ain't that a kick in the head" (including a hearty "i remembered the words!"). Oh, he also plays the guitar during "nan's song" but i have to admit that you can tell he just learned it. When I saw him in Europe this summer, his playing was well advanced. This DVD is an absolute must for Robbie Williams fans but I think it can be very entertaining for people who don't know him yet. The documentary about the day of the show is awesome, showing Robbie fooling around backstage and his traditional prayer to Elvis right before the show starts. PS: If you play the lights game and win, you are rewarded with an a-capella/unplugged version of "sweet home alabama"!!

The greatest entertainer of our age,

I'll admit it. I'm obsessed. I can't get enough of RW. He's the only music I play in my car or on my home stereo and I even bought a code-free, region-free DVD player so I could buy the Region 2 version of this particular DVD. I can't understand why America remains unimpressed with his talent. The Robbie Williams Show depicted on this DVD was a manufactured event but well worth the effort. The Robster sings some of his most memorable music including tracks from the recently-released "Escapology," a disc that has broken worldwide records everywhere but the United States. This guy can do it all and he's still under 30. All of Rob's CDs have hidden tracks; and all of his DVDs have games that when played correctly give you bonus footage. I hate these. The game on the Robbie Williams Show is impossible! I don't have the hand-eye coordination necessary to win. Apart from that, he can do no wrong in my book. Williams just completed a record-breaking tour in Europe in which he played to sell out crowds totalling 600,000 people. Since he is probably never going to tour the United States, this DVD is the only way I'll ever get to see him perform.

A top show,

This is a classic performance by a first-class entertainer. For those of you who haven't seen a Robbie Williams live show, or for those who may not be very familiar with his music, this DVD will probably convert you. This is very much a staged performance, set at Pinewood Studios in front of a select few (300, as opposed to the 50,000 plus of his stadium shows) people, for the filming of a TV show and this DVD. Don't let this put you off, though. It does not feel manufactured at all; it is very intimate and thoroughly enjoyable. The set list is a great combination of 'Escapology' tracks, some 'Swing' standards as well as older RW hits. At the time of filming the show the 'Escapology' album had not yet been released, so these could well be the first live performances of the songs off that album, and yet they sound every bit as good as on the tour later on. The band absolutely rock, and the dancers really complement the show. 'Hot Fudge' is, well, HOT. The track selection really shows off Robbie's versatility. He really can sing. He does the Swing songs very well, and it's obvious how much he enjoys singing them. My own favourite, however, is one of the extra tracks: 'Revolution', sung here with backing singer Katie Kissoon. Robbie Williams has serious presence; he's got more charisma than just about any other of today's artists. Just watch him interact with the audience: he flirts and pokes good-natured fun at them. His sense of humour is sharp and witty, his timing spot-on. And for those of you who can recognise and appreciate good looks as an added bonus, you will not be disappointed. Robbie has never looked this good.

Robbie: the natural showman,

This review is from: The Robbie Williams Show (DVD)
I've been a RW fan since he split from Take That. It wasn't clear back then whether his solo career would take off; ex-boy band members tend to falter when faced with having to carry off an album, or a concert, all by themselves. But Robbie flew out of the starting gate and never looked back - it seemed as though Take That was a training ground for his real career.
Since then, he has become a huge star all over the world (except, inexplicably, here in the US, where he is all but unknown, although most people are probably familiar with 'Let Me Entertain You'), and has branched out into swing with a legendary concert at the Albert Hall and a fabulous album to go with it. Only Robbie has the cheek and the charisma to pull off something like this. He happens to be a fantastic singer and a gifted performer, and his sheer chutzpah does the rest. 'The Robbie Williams Show' was made to promote his 'Escapology' album. Ostensibly a TV show, it uses a gigantic set built at Pinewood Studios to give it a large feel. There is some spectacular scenery, particularly a huge scaffold on which about 100 dancers gyrate in silhouette while Robbie belts it out in front of them. The colours, lighting, and camerawork are clever. What shines are Robbie's natural demeanour and strong connection with the audience. This would not have been visible (or even possible) in a traditional concert format; the small stage-in-the-round just for Robbie with the musicians off to one side allows him to make close eye contact and (in both senses) touch people. This lets his humour and charm come to the fore. He's cheeky and a bit lewd, but you just can't help loving him. On top of all that, of course, the music is terrific. The song list is an ideal mix of his older hits, the swing stuff, and the then-new Escapology tracks. Robbie throws everything he has behind each song. His vocal range and power are top notch, and he doesn't have any of those irritating phony-soulful vocal mannerisms so popular among other solo singers these days. From swing ballads to grunge rock anthems, he can do it all. Highly recommended.

How He Doesn't Do Well in America Amazes Me,

I really dont understand it. I havent even seen it yet and i know it will be wonderful. I do have the CD and have listened to it many times, shoot, i have everything else he has done. Knebworth, and Albert Hall, and Berlin this spring. Plus his CD's are just outstanding. I listen to him or watch his stuff constantly, and I'm here in Tennessee. No one knows him and I just dont get it. I just can hope one day that MTV will grow up and show his much more mature entertainment, even when he was younger. You can tell he really enjoys himself, and really love what he does. He is cocky but humble. Gorgeous yet appreciative of what hes been given. You can see that that is the real him on stage.

Excellent TV concert - but ....,
By William (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Robbie Williams Show (DVD)
One glimpse of this DVD and you will notice that it is not a 'real' concert such as a stadium performance. This DVD is a copy of a television performance that Williams did in 2002 to promote his then new album ESCAPOLOGY. The concert therefore feels very rehearsed and scripted. Nevertheless, it is just as enjoyable as watching a proper concert because WIlliams is so engaging. However, I am yet to work out if he is lip synching. I realise the songs performed aren't the recorded versions, but I have a sneeking suspicion that he recorded them before this TV concert then lip-synched. What do other reviewers feel?
Aside from this shortfalls, this DVD is a must-own for any Williams fan. The tracklisting is excellent.

A showcase for RW and his not-yet-released (at the time) Escapology album, this DVD is a great addition for RW fans. Lots of cool behind-the-scenes stuff (RW DVD's always include a ton of extras) and overall just a very entertaining show to watch. Not quite as much energy as he has for his bigger stadium gigs, but well worth the price. With the release of this DVD in teh US, you can now get all of RW's DVD's in the US (Angels, Where Egos Dare and Live at the Royal Albert Hall) which is good for his more demanding US fans.

I must say it is about time, that RW returned. Being here in America, people don't understand that his talent rivals that of just about any American based singer. He allows the people in the audience to become a part of his life, and more importantly his music. The saddest part is that mainstream America and the "gods" of the music industry, don't realize what they are missing out on. So take it from a RW fan, This is a great show and more importantly, for real music, not like Justin Timberlake, or that other phony stuff, it is a must have. The graphics are great with the DVD options and the sounds make you feel like you are right there, apart of the show. Hopefully, RW will make an appearance in America, and then we can truly appericate him and his talents.

RW - Top Notch Geezer,

I moved to the States last year from England and couldn't believe no-one had heard of Robbie Williams. I bought 2 of his CD's over with me and introduced my American wife to his excellent music, she plays them all the time now! This DVD is brilliant to the extreme, he is a real showman. The interaction with the audience makes you laugh out loud. The songs on this DVD are exceptional, with a few numbers from his latest album - Escapology, and a few old favourites from past albums too. The extras are great also. I just wish he were more popular here, because his concerts are always a sell-out in England with phenomenal reviews, and I have never been able to get tickets. If you've never heard of Robbie Williams, BUY THIS DVD, and get his latest album ESCAPOLOGY. You will NOT be disappointed. If you HAVE heard of him, you should already have this DVD and everything else he has done!!
