An Engaging and Fun Read,
By A Customer
This review is from: Robbing You Blind: Protecting Your Money from Wall Street's Hidden Costs and Half-Truths: Moneymaking Strategies for Today's Investor (Hardcover)
I learned so much by reading this book. It is quite a page turner and I had a hard time putting it down. Mr. Dempsey's plain speaking and easy-to-follow sytle is refreshing and his insider tips are thought provoking. The chapters on 401(k) plans and online trading were the most interest to me. I did find the chapter on the SEC eye-opening because I had no idea that they were so remiss in protecting investors. This at first was hard to believe, but Mr. Dempsey does make a convincing case for his concerns with the agency. All in all I thought the book was solid and well worth the money!

An Honest Voice In a Den of Thieves,

This review is from: Robbing You Blind: Protecting Your Money from Wall Street's Hidden Costs and Half-Truths: Moneymaking Strategies for Today's Investor (Hardcover)
I have had a full-service broker manage my money for years. After reading this book I decided to put some of the techniques to work.Boy was my broker ever surprised! For the first time ever I got a 25% discount on all of my stock trades and one of my account fees was waived. I never had the courage to ask for these discounts before, but after reading this book you want to jump up and defend your rights as an investor. It may be true that the rich get richer and middle class investors like me pay the bill, but I am paying 25% less after reading the book.

A highly informative expose of sorts on the inside world of investing. Teaches you not to trust blindly in your broker's advice, but research on your own. An easy-to-understand, interesting read.

This book should be required reading for any that either have money or plan to have money in the stock market. Why? Because the tricks of the trade and hidden fees are going to eat into your profits and at the very least you should want to know where your money is going. Thinking of seeing a financial planner? Read this book to arm yourself against some of ploys they might use against you. Using a full service stock broker in your trades? Some of what goes on behind closed doors might surprise you.You should understand how car salesmen work before buying a car, why not understand how mutual fund salesmen work before investing, especially since the amount of money is probably going to be a much larger amount. It is the naïve and uninformed get soundly fleeced everyday in the financial markets, at the very least, read this book before making any large financial decisions that involve trusting the advice from a financial advisor, banker or stock broker. These often have built in conflicts of interests that could cost you money. While pros and those in the know will probably not find anything here new, and stock brokers and other financial salesmen probably hate this book, I strongly recommend it to any that are thinking about entering the financial markets.

This book is OUTSTANDING,

Before you invest one dime of your hard earned money - by all means read this book! If you are a student interested in personal finance - read the book. The author speaks in plain language about Wall Street. He explains why commissioned brokers and their sales people are total slime. He shows that brokers and financial planners are not the least bit interested in giving good investment advice. All they want is a percentage of your money. They could care less about you. Do yourself a great big favor - read the book two or three times. Don't ever listen to a broker's advice about individual stocks. And do what this author explains - buy no-load, no fee mutual funds with the best long-term track records - yourself - directly from the fund companies. At last, someone has exposed Wall St. for what it really and truly is - nothing but hype and hucksterism.

You may not like this book, but you will be glad you read it. Ultimately, you are your best financial advisor. Mark Dempsey does a good job exposing the conflicts of interest that exist with the world of Wall Street.

I first came across Dempsey when I read "Tricks of the Trade" a few years ago. That book gave me alot of insight into brokers and what is important to them. I re-read "Tricks" after I read Dempsey's second book. Taken together, these two books truly help one learn what NOT to do with investment money (hint: Do NOT trust anyone else with your money. It is your money and you should make the decisions), as well as some advice as to what to do. Every investor should read these two books!

I can't believe what I read in this book that was published a couple of years ago. The author seems to have a cystal ball when he talked about analysts and how they did the wrong thing by investors. Robbing You Blind also hits the nail on the head when it talks about brokers and their wicked ways. Enron 401k messes are predicted in the book and not one soul seems to have cared to take care of the problem Sadly, the book looks at regulators in a different way giving them little credit in helping investors and standing up for their interests. Recent headlines seem to support the allegations. What is so interesting about this book is that nothing was done to help investors from being robbed blind for so many years. Why, I wonder?

I am a beginning investor and I think this book will go a long way toward keeping me from getting scammed. I am not a big reader, but I finished this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. I learned a lot about what NOT to do. My only concern is that I only learned a little bit about what TO do...but this was not the focus of this book. I hope there is a follow-up book that gives advice about where Mark feels we should take our money. This book does exactly what it says and it does it a very fun to read way. Congratulations to Mark.
