The Inspiring Story of One Man's Service to His Country and How It Saved His Life

Growing up poor and black in the segregated South, Robert knew he had to do something with his life if he was to avoid an eternal prison of poverty. Like so many others, he found an escape hatch in the United States Army. But then he got a whole lot more than he bargained for. Robbobell chronicles Robert's remarkable journey from messed-up kid to GI, drill instructor and finally, educator. This candid and often humorous memoir takes readers behind the scenes of black life in the 1950s South, when saying the wrong thing to the wrong person could earn a potentially dangerous rebuke. From there, the narrative moves to Robert's Army experiences as he yearns for a better life. Through boot camp, jump school and service in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, Robert learns the core values in wartime; staying alive and looking out for your buddies; don't include anything about race. What follows is an edge-of-your-seat narrative of survival spiced with the realities of drug use in the military during the 1970's and 80's. But with help from the Lord and Robert's beloved soul mate, Jackie, he builds an impressive, globetrotting military career; while never forgetting how to have a good time. Robbobell: The Scars of a Painful but Wonderful Past, is an unsantitized, enlightening look at the challenges faced by millions of African Americans during segregation. It is the story of how the Army molded a young man to withstand the enormous pitfalls of his time. And it is about an important period of American history that we simply cannot afford to ignore.

Robbobell is a passage of the sprite of the intersoul of trying to suceed and ending with a conclusion in affrimation of triumph. The book is largely driven to capture the reader's own dreams and at the same time deliver a - I have been there before but no one was around to tell me until now. An unigue author with a perceptive future and shared insight for the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robbobell, September 16, 2009
This review is from: Robbobell: Scars of a Painful but Wonderful Past (Paperback)
Robbobell gives you the chance to take a look into the deep south, during a time when African-American's were to stay in their place. The book takes you on a journey that can be compared to that of a butterfly. How the ugly cattepliar that nobody wants around turns into a beautiful colorful butterfly that everyone wants to see floating through the air. This journey marks the magnificent work of God, but isnt preachy. It just allows you to see the marvelous way that God spared a life many times over. That is all the testimony that is needed. I reccomend this book to young people who need to have a roadmap, when they are finding themselves lost in a big world. I also reccomend this book to Chrisitians to share this testimony with others, so they can see the works of God. This book will also be a good choice for a non believer or somebody looking for a good read.

This book is simply amazing. The author recounts his terribly humble beginnings and how he was able to overcome those obstacles. Through his stories, the author shares practical wisdom for all. Reading Robbobell will prove beneficial for every facet of American society. It's the "real deal" on a success story from the African American community.
