Editorial Reviews

"Stern ably tells his stories, as do the spectacular photographs and drawings in this weighty tome. Unlike many neo-conservatives who genuflect at a monolithic altar of the past, Stern has a playfully pluralistic relationship to architectural history and contemporary design. And unlike the hippest of the hip, he has no need to dadaistically defy or defame the architectural canon . . . For that and more, this book warrants our appreciative attention."
—Norman Weinstein, ArchNewsNow

People who buy these books know what to expect, so I'll keep my comments short.

If you like Stern's work (and not everyone does), you'll love this book, because Stern is REALLY in his element in academe. As a former Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, Stern really loves academic buildings, and this love affair shows both in his work and in this book.

Stern's firm has designed beautiful, classical and postmodern structures for over 50 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. This portfolio brings nearly all of them to you with astonishing interior and exterior photography, plans, elevations, design concepts and sketches. Each structure is discussed at length, within the context of its campus surroundings. This is a book for serious students and enthusiasts of classical and postmodern academic design.

Some real highlights are Stern's designs for the University of Virginia, with appropriate deference and acknowledgment of Thomas Jefferson; his designs for the business schools at Rice University and Harvard University; the new and absolutely startling design for Northrup Hall at Trinity University; and an absolute masterpiece at the Brooklyn Law School.

The only real disappointment I have with the book is that, ironically, Stern's design for the new residential colleges at Yale University are only depicted in sketches. No photographs. NO! In fact, many of Robert's best designs have come recently, as late as 2008-2009, and those projects are presented in words and sketches only.

Small quibble. Buy this book, by all means, if you like this kind of thing. You know who you are.
