Editorial Reviews

Review

"Stern ably tells his stories, as do the spectacular photographs and drawings in this weighty tome. Unlike many neo-conservatives who genuflect at a monolithic altar of the past, Stern has a playfully pluralistic relationship to architectural history and contemporary design. And unlike the hippest of the hip, he has no need to dadaistically defy or defame the architectural canon . . . For that and more, this book warrants our appreciative attention."
—Norman Weinstein, ArchNewsNow

This is the fifth Robert A.M. Stern: Buildings and Projects book that I have purchased for my personal library. The man and his firm's work remain genius. However, in this most recent edition published by The Monacelli Press, the site plan images are printed so small that it is impossible to study the floor plans. Photographs of the completed projects, however, are often printed on full page spreads. Given that this is an architecture book and not a glossy periodical dedicated to interior design, I would prefer to review the plans without a magnifying glass. Overall, this book will be a disappointment for anyone who purchases the Stern titles expecting to review the plans.

Robert A. M. Stern is probably best known for his part in the revival of Shingle Style houses during the last half of the twentieth century. He has also developed along eclectic lines to produce a large array of buildings of all types and sizes in a plethora of styles. This is one of a series of monographs produced by him which provide coverage of all his projects. Each significant project is given at least one photograph and a brief written description. The floor plans which are included are miniscule to the point of being virtually useless. That is my only quibble with this book.

It's a very interesting book with fine pictures. Many lovely homes and with 15 Central Park West as the star of the book. Fast delivery too. I'm pleased.

Great Book
Packaging envelope should have been thicker for a book this heavy through the postal system
slight knicks could have been prevented at the edges if a more solid protective sleeve had been used.
