Editorial Reviews

Review

"Irony abounds here: a neon gas station sign sports the word 'Frontier,' and a 'Buffalo for Sale' sign along the highway boasts one lonely buffalo in the photograph. Cow culture has given way to car culture--drive-in restaurants and movie theaters. Graffiti is scribbled on Lookout Mountain--modern-day cave paintings." --B&W: Black & White Magazine

"Adams' book helped create a new kind of landscape photography, tough-minded about the mess humans make, that's been pursued by Richard Misrach, Edward Burtynsky and scores of others. " -- Richard Lacayo --Time Magazine

OK--I don't know why Amazon has two listings for this book--but this one is a classic--

I agree with the first reviewer--this book is not exactly an Ansel Adams view of the western landscape--but read the essay--Szarkowski rifts on the west like Albert Collins singing the blues--yeah, it's a bummer--but oh, so true...

And, as Bob Dylan once said, in response to savage reviews--"So, if it's so bad, why do they keep buying tickets?"

Adams is widely reckoned among the top American landscape photographers. The pictures in this carefully presented collection are all excellent where technique and composition are concerned, but his images have mostly to do with urban sprawl and the creeping of tract houses and the like into what was an already bleak environment. "Depressing" is the word that comes to mind.
