Benchley's early essays collected,
By S.J. (Orillia, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Robert Benchley Omnibus: Timeless Stories of Wit, Wisdom and Whimsy (Hardcover)
This collection of early Benchley essays is not part of the official Benchley canon, but a "limited edition" collection that is not equivalent to (i.e., a reprint of) an earlier book. These are all early magazine pieces, with original (not Gluyas Williams) artwork included. If you have "Benchley Lost and Found", you can skip this book, since it contains all of that collection, along with a couple dozen other pieces of similar vintage. Of the latter, some are found in other collections, but a handful are not. If you have other Benchley collections (especially BL&F), this one is mostly redundant, but if you don't it may be just the ticket.Being a later (current?) edition, this book is nicely produced and will appeal to someone who wants a clean, new, hardcover edition of Benchley. (This publisher also reprints other Benchley titles.) My only quibble is that the price seems high for material that is so old that it is now out of copyright. |
