Book Description

October 10, 2001
Robert Capa (1913-1954) was one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century and a founding member of the Magnum photographic agency. His lifework, consisting of 70,000 negative frames, constitutes an unparalleled documentation of a crucial 22-year period (1932-1954) encompassing some of the most catastrophic and dramatic events of the 20th century. This volume presents a definitive selection of Capa's work. The collection of 937 photographs was chosen by Capa's brother, Cornell Capa, and his biographer, Richard Whelan, who re-examined all of Capa's contact sheets to compile this master set of images. The photographs, arranged in chronological order and accompanied by commentaries and identifying captions, constitute an in-depth survey of Robert Capa's finest work over the course of his career. The pictures reveal the dramatic shifts in location and subject matter that Capa experienced from day-to-day, representing the trajectory of his life - from war-torn Spain to Picasso on a sunny beach in France; from carousing with Ernest Hemingway in London to historic images of the Allied landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy in 1944. The book design groups together pictures that constitute a story - for example, the Popular Front rallies in Paris in 1936 - in order to maintain the original coherence of the work.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is definitive, December 8, 2001

This review is from: Robert Capa: The Definitive Collection (Hardcover)
I have not seen another book on Robert Capa that provides such a complete and insightful coverage of his career and voluminous production. For those who appreciate the importance of Capa's contribution to the history of photography and the rendition of key events spanning a momentous era of human history, this book is a "must-have". At the same time, it is unfortunate that the publishers chose to economize on the quality of the printing and the binding.

4.0 out of 5 stars This slice of history is a treasure, June 26, 2007
As a student of photography in the 1970's, I was familiar with a few dozen of
these images. However I'm thrilled to be able to experience and share this
collection of hundreds of Robert Capa's images, in roughly chronological order, including a few glimpses shot by others which help give a sense of the
times and places in which he blazed fearlessly through his inevitably short life. This is a great gift for anyone interested in the life and work of the
photojournalist covering the frontlines of world conflict.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great photos, poor font choice, December 30, 2008
This is an excellent collection of Capa's work, it is organized well and one can trace his professional growth. I recommend this book with one concern: The publisher chose to use a font similar to a typewriter, to give the photos a feel for the WWII-era context... but the font is too light to read in many cases. Simply using a bolder typewriter font would have been fine, and earned this book a 5 star rating.
I know this may seem picky, but what good are the details of his life if they cannot be read?
