4.0 out of 5 stars It is definitive
I have not seen another book on Robert Capa that provides such a complete and insightful coverage of his career and voluminous production. For those who appreciate the importance of Capa's contribution to the history of photography and the rendition of key events spanning a momentous era of human history, this book is a "must-have". 3.0 out of 5 stars Quanity vs. Quality
This book has almost a thousand photos taken by Capa but unfortunately because of the quanity of photos some are too small to be enjoyed to the fullest. The text and font are terrible and poor quality (small and faint typewriter print) distracting from an already weak description of the photo's subjects. I was disappointed that the photos from the Spanish Civil War are...

This review is from: Robert Capa: The Definitive Collection (Hardcover)
I have not seen another book on Robert Capa that provides such a complete and insightful coverage of his career and voluminous production. For those who appreciate the importance of Capa's contribution to the history of photography and the rendition of key events spanning a momentous era of human history, this book is a "must-have". At the same time, it is unfortunate that the publishers chose to economize on the quality of the printing and the binding.

4.0 out of 5 stars This slice of history is a treasure, June 26, 2007
As a student of photography in the 1970's, I was familiar with a few dozen of
these images. However I'm thrilled to be able to experience and share this
collection of hundreds of Robert Capa's images, in roughly chronological order, including a few glimpses shot by others which help give a sense of the
times and places in which he blazed fearlessly through his inevitably short life. This is a great gift for anyone interested in the life and work of the
photojournalist covering the frontlines of world conflict.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great photos, poor font choice, December 30, 2008
This is an excellent collection of Capa's work, it is organized well and one can trace his professional growth. I recommend this book with one concern: The publisher chose to use a font similar to a typewriter, to give the photos a feel for the WWII-era context... but the font is too light to read in many cases. Simply using a bolder typewriter font would have been fine, and earned this book a 5 star rating.
I know this may seem picky, but what good are the details of his life if they cannot be read?

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, August 27, 2005

Some of the best war photography. Includes all of Capa's most famous photos, and gives some biographical info. I found it inspiring -- it's more important to be close than to have fancy equipment. Courage and preparation win out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quanity vs. Quality, December 8, 2011
This book has almost a thousand photos taken by Capa but unfortunately because of the quanity of photos some are too small to be enjoyed to the fullest. The text and font are terrible and poor quality (small and faint typewriter print) distracting from an already weak description of the photo's subjects. I was disappointed that the photos from the Spanish Civil War are interrupted with photos of other subjects such as his stints in Paris, the continuity and impact of the devastating war is degraded by the interruptions.

I enjoyed the biography with photos of Capa and his family at the beginning of the book. The book is almost a catalog raisonne of Capa's work and until something better comes along I would recommend purchasing the book while it is still available and moderately price, other Capa's book such as Heart of Spain or unavailable or too expensive for most readers.

This massive photo collection is printed on glossy paper in high quality offset using fine screens. You can see details in the photos here that are missing in other printed collections of Capa photos. Pictures that I thought were a little out of focus in other books are sharp in this one.

I can't be sure without a magnifying glass, but I believe the photos, all of them black and white, are printed as duotones. (This is where the images are printed from two plates to yield more detail in shadows and highlights than is possible with a single plate.)
