Book Description

Icons January 1, 2003
Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) is best known for his magical, timeless 35mm street portraits taken in Paris and its suburbs. Fresh, unstaged, and full of poetry and humor, his photographs portray everyday people (in everyday places, doing everyday things) frozen in time, unwittingly revealing fleeting personal emotions in a public context. Doisneau's gift was the ability to seek out and capture, with humanity and grace, those little epiphanies of everyday Parisian life. This book traces Doisneau's life and career, providing a wonderful introduction to the work of this seminal photographer.

this book is way too small. RD deserves a larger book - maybe not a coffee table/doorstop tome, but something a bit bigger so his photographs - well printed in this book - can be better examined. This book does have three all too brief essays about RD. Even though the cover shot was reportedly staged, this is an overall a nice book to have around - a reminder of what a good street shooter can do. Merci, Robert!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Brassai was better...., May 5, 2011
This review is from: Robert Doisneau 1912-1994 (Icons) (Paperback)
Printing is good, but the actual subject matter is mediocre at best. Doisneau's compositions are flat, lifeless. I can't say I would frame or hang any of his photos and as such, I can't recommend this collection. Brassai definately had a better eye.
