Geoghegan (Lecturer in the Department of Modern History, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland) is an involving and detailed biography of the greatly romanticized Irish revolutionary. Robert Emmet's short life, passionate yet doomed love for Sarah Curran, his daring rebellion for Irish independence against the British, and his subsequent execution in 1803 formed the bases of both history and legend, leading W. B. Yeats to declare him the leading saint of Irish nationalism. A dramatic, detailed, and fascinating life story, Robert Emmet: A Life is a superb work of scholarship and an enthusiastically recommended contribution to Irish History.
