Fayrfax Triumphant,
By John Bradley (NY, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Robert Fayrfax: Missa Tecum principum; Maria plena virtute (Audio CD)
Fayrfax, a largly neglected proponant of the Tudor pre-reformation style is magnificently rendered on this recording. As the director of the ensemble POLYHYMNIA in New York, I used this piece as part of an extensive Liturgical reconstruction for our Dec 1999 Concert. Fayrfax composes music which bridges the middle ages and( for the Birtish isles ) the new style of continental Renaissance composition. This performance beautifully masters this difficult and to many, inaccessable reperatoire. The very sound of Fayrfax represents the full flowering of the Tudor catholic style, musically alligning itself with the church architecture for which it was composed. The complexity of the polyphony expresses in music the fan vaulting of the contemporary church architecture of England at the twilight of the Sarum rite and the dawn of the Anglican Reformation. The use of "jubilating" , the singing of a single vowel sound for long periods of time, creates a celestial atmosphere that, as performed by the Cardinall's Musick certianly transports the listener to the 1520's. I sincerely recommend this recording, not just for the expert but for any one who appreciates sublime beauty.

super OTW,

This review is from: Robert Fayrfax: Missa Tecum principum; Maria plena virtute (Audio CD)
I am amazed that there is only one 8 year old review of this profoundly beautiful music. Of course I do have a very strong opinion that the high point of western musical culture is the sacred music of the Renaissance.I have well over 1500 LPs and CDs. If I had to choose only one, it would be Fayrfax Missa Tecum principum. If you have any interest in the music of this era, you must have this. If you have ever heard more beautiful music than this (especially the Sanctus), please let me know. I titled my review super OTW in honor of the Great Mr. De Koven. When I was a college student circa 1969, he had a wonderful radio program about Baroque music. He referred to pieces he loved a super OTW (out of this world). I am very greatful to Mr. De Koven for the music he brought to me. The music of Fayrfax is truly OTW.

One great delight for a music lover is to purchase a CD blind and to have that disc be revelatory. That is the case here. An obscure composer, for me at least, coupled with an outstanding group gives a CD of rare beauty.
