4.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL SOULFUL VOICE
As far as I know, Robert John had only two hits: a remake of the old classic The Lion Sleeps Tonight in 1972 and the moving Sad Eyes in 1978, but what ageless classics they are! This album also includes a great dance mix of Lion, while his interpretation of Hey There Lonely Girl is graceful and songs like Lonely Eyes and Only Time are likewise soulful and engaging. His...

2.0 out of 5 stars Sad Indeed
When a company releases a "Greatest Hits," "Best of.." and "Complete.." you can bet they cleaverly withhold at least one great song or use a remake. In this case, "If You Don't Want My Love" (1968) is omitted. It was maybe not everyones favorite, it was mine, but it deserved to considered among his top charting hits of all time. And, it seems, there is but one cd out...

4.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL SOULFUL VOICE, May 29, 2003
This review is from: Robert John - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
As far as I know, Robert John had only two hits: a remake of the old classic The Lion Sleeps Tonight in 1972 and the moving Sad Eyes in 1978, but what ageless classics they are! This album also includes a great dance mix of Lion, while his interpretation of Hey There Lonely Girl is graceful and songs like Lonely Eyes and Only Time are likewise soulful and engaging. His distinctive high tenor voice is what sets him apart, and the choice of material is excellent. It-s a pity that such a talented singer weren't more prolific. This album is worth owning on the strength of Sad Eyes and the two versions of Lion (Wimoweh) alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seventies personified, January 26, 2002
This review is from: Robert John - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I only have vague memories of Robert John and purchased the album for "The Lion Sleeps To-Night".

There are two versions one a so-called "dance re-mix" and both hold up well to the Tokens "original" version.

The rest of the album is well worth listening to and the vocals are good. Light but enjoyable.

The cuts at least seem to be original.

This was Robert John's second time with fame, in the late 50's he recorded by the name Bobby Pedrick Jr., I have the Pajama Party 45 rpm and love both sides. This second career was a showcase of his talent, I recommend this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars NO, HE'S NOT SHANIA'S HUSBAND..., September 1, 2006
This review is from: Robert John - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
... fellow reviewer Rick Wingender is misinformed - Robert John the singer and prolific super-producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange are not one and the same - they are two totally different people.

"Mutt" Lange, Shania's husband, is much younger, slimmer, kinda femme-looking and possesses a headful of curly blond hair. Robert John the singer has been around quite some time, and although his weight has apparently yo-yo'd over the years, is usually rather heavyset and balding.

I mainly purchased the cd for the hit song Sad Eyes. What a pleasant surprise to find out it was the long EP version (4:14)!

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting..., August 4, 2006

I loved Sad Eyes. I never know who sang it until I did a little research and came up with Robert John. Then I found out this guy quit singing to become a producer. He had a little bit of success, producing AC/DC, Foreigner, Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, and some hot chick named Shania Twain, who he then married. His full name is Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
