5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool
This is a great little tool. I bought it to shape guitar necks and it works perfectly. Even out of the box, the blade was really sharp, and with a bit of honing, turned scary sharp. This is a great deal! It's a shame these tools aren't more popular.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the tool for the job
The performance of the tool is compromised by manufacturing compromises. The body of the tool is cast and painted, which is OK for the handles but the blade rests on this uneven surface which results in chattering accross the wood. The tool also clogs up immediatly. For the time I spent trying to tune it up to make it useful, I could have bought a tool with a machined bed...

The performance of the tool is compromised by manufacturing compromises. The body of the tool is cast and painted, which is OK for the handles but the blade rests on this uneven surface which results in chattering accross the wood. The tool also clogs up immediatly. For the time I spent trying to tune it up to make it useful, I could have bought a tool with a machined bed and a high-quality blade. Google spokeshave and buy a better tool - that what I ended up doing.

Also - skip the honing guide offered as a companion purchase. The blade is too short to fit in the guide, so it is useless.

This German made spokeshave arrived within a week. It was purchased for my grandson and he is quite pleased. It seems it holds up to an 8 year old who has taken wood working courses and is familiar with the tool.
Awesome to find it on Amazon because local shops do not carry this old fashioned woodworking tool.

The Kunz flat-bottom spokeshave is a great value. Yes, it will need some tuning out of the box, but it worked wonderfully after making sure the area around the mouth was evenly flat (c. 5 min) and honing the blade. Once set, it was a thrill to get those thin curly shavings.

In specialty muzzleloader building shops, these are hardly offered and when they are they costs somewhere about 80 bucks. I got mine for much less and I even got two. The curved and this flat one. Makes stock carving and thinning a breeze.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good spokeshave after it's tuned, December 23, 2010
This review is from: Kunz 151 Flat Spokeshave (Tools & Home Improvement)
As with most any hand tool, you'll need to tune it once you get it. I first flattened the bottom and took it to a nice polish, and then used a file to slightly round the very edges - they seem to get a bit sharper after you flatten it. Now flatten and sharpen the blade and it will perform beautifully.
