Book Description

Robert Louis Stevenson's cinematic legacy is studied in-depth here, with a look at his life and his body of work. From The Sire De Maletroit's Door (1877) to St. Ives (1896), each adapted story and all relevant film versions are examined, including exhaustive analyses of the 1931 adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the 1945 version of The Body Snatcher. A discussion of the process of adapting literature for the movies, demonstrating how Stevenson's stories have been misrepresented for more than 80 years, is also provided.

5.0 out of 5 stars A monumental work on filmed literature!, August 5, 2004
This review is from: Robert Louis Stevenson: Life, Literature, and the Silver Screen (Library Binding)
Robert Louis Stevenson was one of the most brilliant writers of English prose, always beautiful, sometimes exciting, sometimes funny, and often scary as hell. His talent and often tragic life is wonderfully recalled in this extremely well-written, massive history, which covers his life, literature and the films adapted from his stories in equal detail. This book is a thorough literary study, as well as a comprehensive critique of every film made about his fabulous stories, which have usually been misrepresented. The chapter on DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE is a book in itself! Several top Stevenson scholars have praised this book, which is really the only volume you need about the legendary Scottish genius. Lots of fantastic photos, including some rare items from the author's collection. McFarland books are a little expensive, but they are beautifully bound and made of the finest, acid-free materials. They last forever!
