Book Description

October 1, 1998
In over thirty years of practice, Robert A. M. Stern has developed a distinctive architecture committed to the synthesis of tradition and innovation and, above all, to the creation and enhancement of a meaningful sense of place. Inspired by the legacy of great American architecture, his firm, Robert A. M. Stern Architects, has produced a wide variety of building types at differing scales in a range of stylistic vocabularies throughout the world. This monograph, which follows volumes documenting Stern's practice in the years 1965-1980, 1981-1985, and 1987-1992, includes more than one hundred projects from the years 1993-1998. Also included in this volume are unbuilt projects and works in progress.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Stern ably tells his stories, as do the spectacular photographs and drawings in this weighty tome. Unlike many neo-conservatives who genuflect at a monolithic altar of the past, Stern has a playfully pluralistic relationship to architectural history and contemporary design. And unlike the hippest of the hip, he has no need to dadaistically defy or defame the architectural canon . . . For that and more, this book warrants our appreciative attention."
—Norman Weinstein, ArchNewsNow

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Great Architect, May 10, 2000
By A Customer
Bob Stern is probably America's greatest living architect, and this book covers his best projects yet. If you're sick of modernist boredom and post-modern silliness, this neotraditionalist architect is a breath of fresh air. Of course, he also proves he can do modern styles better than most modernists. He did a building in my neighborhood and everyone loves it. This book is beautifully photographed and has useful text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elegant Architecture, October 22, 2005
Robert Stern is a master of the grand traditional American mansion. His homes fit in so well with the surrounding homes in these old beautiful neighborhoods. His homes are done with such elegance and taste and he really understands how a house effects the enviroment around it. His mansions, though often grand, have a sensitivity to their surroundings that are often not evident in homes by similar architects. I know of an estate he designed in the Preston Hollow neighborhood in Dallas, and it even though it is enourmous, it fits into the North Dallas landscape beautifully and it looks like it has been there for 50 years or more, this is a special talent he possesses and you see it in vivid detail in this book. The text is highly informative and the photographs are crisp. If you have any interest in grand tranditional residental architecture, then I can't imagine you being disappointed in this book.
