4.0 out of 5 stars Motherwell Overview to the early 60s, January 2, 2011

This review is from: Robert Motherwell (Paperback)
This book is a good compromise between biographical information, collection of selected works in both color and B&W reproductions, and examples of Motherwell's own writing. Friend and MOMA curator Frank O'Hara reviews Motherwell's career and paintings in a long chapter. Motherwell writes a long, stream-of-consciousness letter to O'Hara about art and the world. There is a good chronology to provide biographical data, replete with photos of the artist in studio, with family, and amongst his contemporaries in the art world. There are substantive excerpts from Motherwell's critical writings over the years, about art in general and specific artists such as Miro and Calder. The 95-page volume is in a stylish, near-square format approx 9" that suits the art and the writing both. A MOMA publication.
