This three-volume set of the complete paintings and collages of Robert Motherwell is the last word on his varied and masterful output. The authors have created an exceptional and flawless catalogue, with highly insightful and in-depth essays and referances in the first volume, then two massive volumes with the paintings (volume two) and the collages and paintings on paper (volume three), all printed in crisp and beautiful color plates (wherever possible). The quality of the printing and binding are also exceptional; it's a set that is meant to last, both in terms of scholarship and photo-reproductions as well as to hold up physically as a set of invaluable referance books. The authors are careful not to gloss over any of Motherwell's shortcomings as an artist or as a person, and there is no doubt that Motherwell himself would have approved of this approach.

The price of the set makes it a remarkable bargain as well. Art lovers of all kinds, but especially those enamored of 20th century abstract painting, will do well to be sure to secure a copy of this set while it is still in print. The investment will pay off in years of study and pleasure in the enjoyment and appreciation of Motherwell's art.

an absolutely outstanding effort by all involved with this massive undertaking. Impeccable in every aspect. Yale demonstrates what it takes to be on top of the game as a publisher. All who contributed to this work can feel proud. One of the finest art volumes I ever have read-and I read every word on every page. Inspiring

I am a huge fan of Motherwell's and was excited to get the set despite the price tag. I don't know what I was thinking but I wasn't expecting what I got. This is a great set for a scholar or a curator but certainly didn't do the trick for someone who wanted to experience some of what made his paintings and collages so great. All the images were small. There were no full page or even half page sized images. It was what it said it was...a catalog of everything that Motherwell ever made. I realized after I got it that I hadn't fully understood what a catalogue raisonne is. I had thought that among the thumbnail images, there would be others that were larger and easier to view. My mistake. But I do hope that this review will warn others like me that this is really a set for professionals in the field of curating and art history.

Having said this, the set is beautifully produced. The reproductions are great (what I could see of them) and the design elegant. If I were in the field, I would be thrilled with this. As an artist who wanted some large, gorgeously produced reproductions that I could fall into and study, I was disappointed.

I totally don't agree with the negative review posted about this catalogue raisonne. I could write a long review why I like this so much but I will spare you and my fingers from typing. The bottom line is if you like Robert Motherwell and track his work buy this set. Yes, it's expensive but worth the investment. Treat yourself. You will be glad you did.
