For Flute Majors and Teachers Alike!,
By MelissaBarrow "MelissaBarrow" (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Robert Muczynski: Complete Works for Flute (Audio CD)
This cd helped in interpretation of 'Three Preludes for Unaccompanied Flute' for a recital. The liner notes even list the publishing info as a guide for students or a teacher wanting to purchase an edition to use along with the cd for lessons.Alexandra Hawley and the late Jean-Pierre Rampal are terrific! It was wonderful to hear a composer on the cd as well. Muczynski on piano demonstrates to future performers of his works on how he wants it and makes the cd a true classic. I see this becoming a staple of our flute recording library!

Essential for music library!,
By Cassidy Rose Pratt (Logan, UT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Robert Muczynski: Complete Works for Flute (Audio CD)
I found this an excellent recording. It is notable that the composer is also the pianist - it gives the listener a little something extra not found on every CD. The music on this CD is light, fun and beautiful. Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alexandra Hawley give terrific performance. I would recommend it to flutists and music lovers alike. Every song on this CD is wonderful. I think it is a necessity for a complete music library!

More rhythmic integrity please!,

This review is from: Robert Muczynski: Complete Works for Flute (Audio CD)
My wife and I listened to this performance of Muczynski's Flute Sonata today while driving. My wife is a professional flutist and I am a professional pianist and we played this sonata for the first time in 1980(!) for her Junior recital as a flute performance major. We played it many times after that and I have accompanied numerous other flutists in performances of it. So we are both very familiar with it and were looking forward to listening to this recording since it's been a few years since we have heard or performed it. Well, what a disappointment! The numerous small rhythmic inaccuracies; syncopations not placed quite right or the fluctuations of tempo; speeding up or slowing down for a few bars and then resuming tempo was very distracting and ruined the rhythmic integrity of the music, which in this piece is so vitally important! To be fair, this is not a review of the whole cd but rather just the sonata. For a good recording of that try the Alexis Still recording. It's very good!
